BHS Head Coach Jim Shockley retires and is selected into Salem-Roanoke Baseball Hall of Fame

BHS Head Coach JIm Shockley

After 20 years of coaching BHS Varsity Baseball, Coach Jim Shockley has retired.  In conjunction with his retirment, he has been elected into the Salme-Roanoke Baseball Hall of Fame.

In 20 years of coaching at BHS, Coach Shockley won 217 games, and guided the Bruins to 7 Regional berths.  A highlight of his career was his 2008 team, which defeated # 1 and previously unbeaten Tunstall (22-0), beating the Trojans 4-3 in regional play, and snapping the schools 56 consecutive home win record.  The Bruin win was one of only two losses handed to pitcher Joe Mantiply in his 33-2 distinguished high school career.

A Hillsville native, Jim earned 11 varsity letters as a three sport standout at Hillsville and Carroll County High Schools.  Four of those letters were in baseball where he learned from coaches Martin Dowdy and Bill Worrell. While attending Virginia Tech Jim began a 19 year umpiring career (12 of those as Baseball Commissioner of the New River District).  During that time he also worked 2 summers as the public address announcer and official scorekeeper for the Wytheville Braves of the Appalachian League.  Since becoming the Head Varsity Baseball Coach at Blacksburg High School in 1992, Jim’s teams have won 217 games and 7 regional berths.  Many of his players have gone on to play college baseball and several assistant coaches have advanced to other coaching opportunities.  His former players include a Bellamy Award winner, 2 district POYs, and 4 VHSCA All Star Game participants.  Jim’s teams are known for solid fundamentals, great effort, and good sportsmanship.  Jim and his wife of 41 years, Carolyn, have two sons, Greg and Kevin, who both played 3 sports for their Dad.  Jim also coached football at Blacksburg High School for 38 years and basketball at Blacksburg Middle School for 35 years.
