Blacksburg's rally fell just short on Tuesday, losing to Alabama 4-3 in a very close and exciting baseball game.
Alabama came out of the gate quickly, scoring two runs in the top of the 1st to go ahead 2-0.
Grant Johnson would reach base in the 2nd and scored on a sac bunt by Cordell Croy.
Alabama scored a run in the top of the 3rd to go ahead 3-1.
In the bottom of the 4th, Christian Vance and Colin Colver reached base with no outs. After an out, and runners advancing one base on a passed ball, Ben Freel sac bunted Vance home to make the score 3-2. Collver was stranded at third.
In the top of the 5th, Alabama would socre a run to extend their lead to 4-2.
In the bottom of the 6th, the Bruins would make one last rally. With two outs, Cole Epperley was hit by a pitch. Wesley McCoy would come to the plate and after working the count to 3 balls and two strikes (and two outs), McCoy fouled off 4 pitches and eventually baited the pitcher into making a mistake and drove the ball into the gap for a stand up double, scoring Epperley.
With the score now 4-3, Blacksburg fake bunted, pulling in the Alabama 3rd baseman and McCoy took 3rd uncontested. Blacksburg then made an offensivesubstituion, inserting Matt Freel for McCoy at 3rd base. However, it was not meant to be for Blacksburg as Freel was stranded at third as the Bruins made their last out.
Congratulations to the Blacksburg Minors for making it as far as they would. With just 4 regular season teams to pull from, they advanced further than anyone thought they could. This season should provide a lifetime worth of memories. Our State Champion banner will fly at Kipps next season.
