Eight runs in last two innings propels Blacksburg

Two big defensive plays and eight runs in last two innings propel the Bruins to a first round win in the District 3 Tournament.

Montgomery Country took the initial lead with a 2-run home run by Hunter Perkins in the bottom of the second inning.  After 2-innings, MC led 2-0.

The Bruin bats came alive in the top of the 3rd when Justin Snyder led off with a double off the left-center field fence.  After a bunt sacrifice by Jacob Verbrugge and walk by Tiquest Terry, consecutive hits by Sebi Cianelli and Jake Verniel, who both later scored, gave Blacksburg a 4-2 lead after three innings that they would never give up.

A solo home run by Brad Shelton in the top of the 4th inning gave Blacksburg a 5-2 lead.  In the bottom of the 4th, MC threatened to have a big inning after getting runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs, but the first big defensive play of the game by the Bruins limited the damage.  Catcher Brad Shelton caught the runner at 3rd base sleeping and threw him out from home.  The runner on 2nd base tried to advance to 3rd base on the play, but a heads-up play by Ryan Anderson got the runner at 3rd base for a double play.  This key play helped limit MC to only one run.  After four innings, Blacksburg led 5-3.

In the top of the 5th, singles by Blake Davis and Justin Snyder, and a double by Sebi Cianelli led to a four runs to give Blacksburg a 9-3 lead going to the bottom of the 5th inning.  After a leadoff single for MC by Hunter Perkins, the second big defensive play of the game, a 6-3 double play by Ryan Anderson, helped limit their opponents to only two runs.  The Bruins held a 9-5 lead with one inning to play.

A two-out rally in the top of the 6th resulted in four more runs for Blacksburg.  Scoring for the Bruins were Blake Davis, Sebi Cianelli, Jake Verniel, and Andrew Roberson.  The 13-5 lead going to the bottom of the 6th was too much for MC to overcome, and Blacksburg finished with a 13-7 win.

The starting pitcher for Blacksburg was Jake Verniel who threw three innings with four strike outs.  Sebi Cianelli pitched the fourth and fifth innings, and Jacob Verbrugge and Jared Madigan combined to close out the game in the 6th inning.

Blacksburg was led offensively by Sebi Cianelli, Jake Verniel, Blake Davis, and Justin Snyder, all four of whom had two hits.  Cianelli and Verniel scored three runs apiece while Davis and Snyder each scored two runs apiece.

Blacksburg advances to play Pulaski County East tomorrow at 6pm.
