Playing two games in two days, the Blacksburg varsity picked up right where they left off on Thursday, by shutting out Radford 5-0 in their season home opener in Blacksburg.
After a scoreless first inning, Owen Ball and Tyler Barry led off the bottom of the second with singles. Alex Shimozono bunted them to 2nd and 3rd. Cody Huff singled to drive in courtesy runner J.B. Wilson and Tyler Barry scored on a botched relay throw to make it 2-0 BHS. John Hamborsky singled to drive in Huff to give the Bruins a 3-0 lead.
BHS starting pitcher Ben Fraley worked out of a bases loaded jam in the third to hold the score at 3-0 and it remained there until the home half of the 5th. Owen Ball led off with a walk and Tyler Barry followed with a single. Alex Shimozono was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by Cody Huff increased the lead to 4-0. The final BHS run was scored in the 6th when Ben Fraley reached on a fielder’s choice and later scored on a double by Danny Osimani.
John Hamborsky led the Bruins, going 3-4 while Owen Ball and Tyler Barry had 2 hits each. Cody Huff added two RBIs.
Ben Fraley was the winning pitcher for Blacksburg going 6 innings, scattering 5 hits, and striking out 8. Camden Croy pitched a scoreless 7th to preserve the shutout.
Blacksburg improves to 2-0 on the season, while Radford starts the season 0-1.

Radford would score first in the bottom on the 2nd, on a Bruin infield error. The game would stay 1-0, until the 6th inning when Blacksburg battled from behind. A Zach Craven hit, followed by an Aidan Ball hit, and a RBI single from Cody Minnix, tied the game at 1-1. Ball would then score on a passed ball, putting the Bruins ahead 2-1. Caden Croy then singled to drive home Minnix. Blacksburg would lead 3-1 after six innings.
In the top of the 7th, Blacksburg picked up an insurance run 4-1.
Caden Croy pitched the first 4 innings, allowing no earned runs. John Hinson pitched the final three innings in relief, giving up only one hit.
Head Coach John Weller said that "I'm proud of my team for battling back the way they did. We faced some really good pitching early on and just couldn't get the bats going. We finally got some hits in the 6th and most importantly, kept the rally going. I'm very proud of my young team being 2-0."
