Northside outlasts Blacksburg 6-1

By Coach Jim Shockley

BHS got a solid pitching performance from Ben Fraley who pitched 5 solid innings, striking out 10 and scattering 7 hits and allowing only one earned run.  The problem was the Bruins committed 5 errors behind him that led to three unearned runs. Fraley left the mound after 5 innings trailing 4-1.  Alex Shimozono pitched the sixth allowing two additional runs (one of them unearned).

In a frustrating game for the Bruins at the plate as well, Northside starter Tyler Rowsey held the Bruins to three hits as the Bruins had one solid hit after another that seemed to have a radar lock on the Viking defenders.  Numerous line drives and hard grounders failed to find gaps in the defense.  John Hamborsky, Owen Ball, and Casey Herman collected hits for the Bruins and Herman had the lone rbi to close the margin to 3-1 in the 5th.

“The guys are playing hard.  They had some solid shots today with not such to show for it.  Ben threw a lot of extra pitches due to the miscues behind him but continued to battle.  Any time you have 10 k’s vs. Northside you have put in a good day’s work.  Northside played an errorless game and we had too many miscues.”

“We are not that far away.  We have got to get better defensively and stop giving away so many runs.  I know this group will keep working hard.  I have faith in them”

With the loss, BHS drops to 2-3.
