The 2016 Blacksburg Minor All-Stars began the District 3 Tournament vs the Radford All-Stars. The brackets were determined by a random draw at the credentials meeting as the two teams drew each other. Blacksburg won the coin flip and elected to be the home team.
Radford started the game with hot bats, scoring three runs in the top of 1st to take a quick 3-0 lead. However, the Blacksburg Minors responded right back, picking up three runs of their own to tie the game 3-3 in the bottom of the 1st inning. Louis Semtner got things started by drawing a lead off walk, and then Major Marshall also walked, advancing Semtner to 2B. Louis and Major pulled off a double steal and then Rioll Pula drew a walk to load the bases. After a fly out, Chip Vaden hit a double to CF, picking up two RBIs by scoring Semtner and Marshall. Brody Shealor hit an RBI sac fly to LF, scoring Pula and tying the game. Vaden moved to 3B on the play. The next batter hit into a fielder’s choice for an out and Radford was able to get an out at home plate on the same play to end the inning.
Radford’s bats stayed hot as they picked up three more runs in the top of the 2nd inning to break the tie, and take the lead 6-3.
Blacksburg, however, could not keep pace and was retired in order and the score remained 6-3 after two complete innings.
Radford added a run in the top of the 3rd to extend their lead to 7-3. The Blacksburg team rallied in the bottom half of the frame, scoring three runs to narrow the Radford lead to 7-6. With one out, Riley Beane drew a walk to get on base. Semtner then singled to CF, advancing Beane to 2B. Marshall was HBP to load the bases with one out. After an infield fly rule out, Beane scored (7-4) on the play and each player advanced one base as the pop fly was dropped by the Radford infielder. Avan Morris then hit an two RBI single, scoring Semtner and Marshall (7-5). Vaden kept the rally going with his second hit of the game, a single to CF. The next batter hit into a fielder’s choice for the third out of the inning, and stranding Vaden. However, the Minors All-Stars had narrowed the game to 7-6 after three innings of play.
With one out in the top of the 4th, Radford’s bats scored five runs off two singles, a double, a triple, and a HR to extend their lead to 12-6.
Blacksburg could not answer, however, as they sent four players to the plate in the bottom half of the inning. Rider Creasy singled to CF, but was stranded.
Morris was inserted to pitch in the top of the 5th and held Radford scoreless, retiring the side in order on two ground outs and a fly out.
Blacksburg could not produce any runs in the bottom of the 5th. Marshall drew a lead off walk and after two outs, Vaden was HBP. Both runners were stranded after a fielder’s choice out.
The Bobcats added three more runs in the top of the 6th to extend their lead to 15-6. Blacksburg was retired in order in the bottom of the 6th to end the game.
The Blacksburg Minors were led by Chip Vaden, who went 2/3 with two RBIs. Louis Semtner, Rider Creasy, and Avan Morris each added a hit. Morris had two RBIs while Semtner scored two runs. Major Marshall reached base twice by drawing two walks and scored both times.
With the loss, the Minors team falls to the loser’s bracket and will face Pulaski County West.
