Virginia Beats Tennessee to Advance to Final Six

August 8, 2007, Madison Heights, VA --- Blacksburg went ahead 1-0 in the top of the first. Thomas Hughes got a hit with two outs and scored on a hit by Tyler Davis. Tennessee responded with there runs in the bottom of the first on timely hits and a couple of walks. Blacksburg was forced to make a pitching change in the first inning. Hal Hughes came in and pitched two solid innings in relief to set up John Hinson, who entered the game in the third inning and pitched the final four innings. Blacksburg would add a run in the third. With two out, Hal Hughes singled and Morgan McCoy singled to score Hughes. There would be two plays at the plate in the inning; the first being safe, and the second ended the inning. Blacksburg scored two runs in the 4th to go ahead 4-3. Eli Straw would deliver a two out RBI single, scoring a run. John Hinson would score from first base on the hit due to a throwing error. Blacksburg would add another run in the 5th to extend their lead to 5-3 on a Thomas Hughes RBI single. In bottom of the fifth inning Tennessee would erupt for 4 runs on sharp hit balls to the outfield, and capitalized on two uncharacteristic Blacksburg outfield errors. Down 7-5 in the top of the 6th, Blacksburg would score four runs. John Hinson would draw a lead off walk and later score on Will Murray's single. With runners on second and third, and one out, Ethan Goforth executed a perfect bunt down the first base line to score Murray. Morgan McCoy would hit a RBI FC to first base, scoring Andrew Guy. Then, Thomas Hughes singled to score Goforth.

In the bottom of the sixth Blacksburg preserved the win with two great defensive plays. One was by Will Murray in centerfield. The other play, by Eli Straw in left field, was perhaps the defensive play of the tournament, as Straw caught a ball going over his head while on a dead run away from home plate. Thomas Hughes led Blacksburg, going 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs. Ethan Goforth went 1 for 3 and scored 2 runs.

Blacksburg advances to the final six and will play South Carolina at 6PM on Thursday.
