James Moyer Sports Complex, Salem VA., July 21, 2007 --- The Blacksburg minors dixie youth all-star team got solid pitching, played great defense and had six timely hits in the 3rd inning in route to a 5-2 victory over a good Charlotte County team in the state tournament. In the bottom of the third inning with Blacksburg leading 1-0, Adam Linkous, Hal Hughes, and Ethan Goforth all singled to load the bases. Morgan McCoy and Thomas Hughes followed with RBI singles to give Blacksburg a 3-0 lead. Blacksburg was not done as Tyler Davis stepped to the plate and produced a 2 RBI hit to push the lead to 5-0. Blacksburg then played outstanding defense the rest of the way to advance in the winners bracket of the state tournament. Blacksburg turned in two double plays during the game to keep the Charlotte County team from getting anything going. The first was a traditional 6-4-3 (Thomas Hughes to Hal Hughes to Tyler Davis) and the second was a sharp line drive hit to Hal Hughes at second base where he made the catch and then flipped to Jake McCoy to end a Charlotte threat. Thomas Hughes also made a nice diving catch at shortstop later in the game and pitched two solid innings in the victory. Caden Croy and John Hinson also worked two innings each on the mound for Blacksburg. After the game, coach Mike Goforth said, "The Kids played their game. It was a team effort where again everyone contributed to the win. We are proud of the boys." Blacksburg will play in the winners bracket Sunday night at 8pm.
