Randolph Park, July 12, 2007 --- The Blacksburg minors all star team found themselves behind for the first time in the district 3 baseball tournament trailing defending champion Patrick County 7-0 in the third inning. However, after scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the third the Blacksburg boys exploded for 8 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to take the lead and then added a single run in the 5th to score an exciting 11-7 come from behind victory to capture the District 3 title and advance to the Virginia Dixie Youth State Tournament. John Hinson had the biggest hit in the 4th when he launched a blast to deep center field which resulted in an in-the-park grand slam to make the score 10 - 7. The decisive fourth began with a walks to Hinson, Thomas Hughes, and Jake McCoy. After Tyler Davis lined out to the third baseman, Eli Straw had an RBI fielder's choice which was followed by RBI singles by Will Murray and Andrew Guy. Ethan Goforth then drew a walk and Morgan McCoy was hit by a pitch to set the stage for Hinson's heroics. Thomas Hughes doubled and Jake McCoy singled after the Hinson blast but neither scored. The big fourth inning consisted of 8 runs, 5 hits, 4 base on balls and one hit batsman. In addition to Hinson, Andrew Guy had a big day at the plate going 3 for 3 with 2 singles, a triple, and 3 runs scored. Defensively, Blacksburg had some early uncharacteristic errors which helped Patrick County to their early lead, however a pretty 4-6-3 double play that consisted of Hal Hughes to Jake McCoy to Tyler Davis and a terrific throw behind the runner from right fielder Guy got the Blacksburg team out of trouble in the 5th. John Hinson also came up big on the mound working 2 innings and striking out 5 batters.
Blacksburg swept through the tournament capturing five wins without losing. All twelve players contributed to the total team effort. Caden Croy worked 10 solid innings on the mound. John Hinson pitched beautifully working Blacksburg out of jams during three games. Thomas Hughes closed out the last two victories on the mound and had some big hits throughout the tournament. Tyler Davis, Hal Hughes, Morgan McCoy were vaccums on the infield all week with Davis and McCoy also coming up with big hits during play. Thanks to assistant coaches Tracy McCoy, Chris Lucas, and Jeff Wall who have worked with the team for the past three weeks and had the boys ready to play.
