Blacksburg traveled to it’s cross county rival, Christiansburg, on Thursday for it’s final game of the regular season. The game was especially important for Christiansburg as they were contending for the # 1 seed in the Conference 32 Tournament, and it was “Senior Day.” However, the Bruins spoiled both events as Blacksburg came away with an impressive 5-1 road win.
The Bruins got their offense going in the top of the first, scoring a run to take a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Ethan Goforth singled past the SS to get on base, and then Adam Linkous singled to RF, advancing Goforth to 3B. Jake Verniel bunted for a single, which scored Goforth (1-0). A ground out ended the inning for the Bruins.
Starting pitcher Tyler Davis held Christiansburg to just one single in the bottom half of the 1st as he only faced four batters.
Neither team scored in the 2nd inning. Christiansburg produced a base runner via a walk, but he was stranded.
The Bruins scored three more runs in the top of the 3rd to extend their lead to 4-0. Seb Cianelli led off the inning by drawing a walk and after an out, Goforth drew a walk. Adam Linkous reached 1B on a fielder’s choice as Cianelli was forced out at 3B. Jake Verniel then doubled to CF, scoring both Goforth and Linkous (3-0). Jake Schirmer then hit an RBI double, scoring Verniel from 2B (4-0). A ground out ended the inning for Blacksburg.
Davis walked the first batter in the bottom of the 3rd inning, but then quickly got two outs on two pitches. After a single, Davis forced the next batter to line out to end the inning.
With two outs in the top of the 4th, Cianelli singled to CF, but was stranded. Blacksburg only sent four batters to the plate in the inning.
In the bottom of the 4th, Davis retired the Blue Demon side on just ten pitches.
Neither team scored any runs in the 5th inning. Blacksburg was retired in consecutive order, while Christiansburg drew two walks and had a base runner reach via a Bruin infield error.
Verniel singled in the top of the 6th to lead off the inning, but was stranded after the next three batters were retired in order.
Christiansburg finally broke the scoring drought, and pushed a run across in the bottom of the 6th. Three walks and a single produced the run for the Blue Demons.
The Bruins added an insurance run in the top of the 7th to extend their lead to 5-1. With one out, Cianelli drew a walk and then Ben Anstrom reached on an error by the Christiansburg SS. Goforth then hit an RBI double to LF, scoring Cianelli. Christiansburg retired the next two Bruin batters to end the inning for Blacksburg.
Jake Verniel was inserted to pitch in the bottom of the 6th inning with bases loaded. In the bottom of the 7th; he retired the side in order to preserve the win for the Bruins. He struck out the lead off batter, forced a fly out, and then a ground out.
Tyler Davis got the win on the mound for Blacksburg, pitching five innings and scattering two hits and giving up just one earned run. He walked six batters and struck out one Blue Demon. Jake Verniel pitched two innings in relief. He surrendered just one hit, while striking out one batter and walking one.
Offensively, Blacksburg scored five runs on eight hits. All five runs were earned. Jake Verniel was 3/4 with three RBIs while Ethan Goforth was 2/3 with one RBI. Seb Cianelli, Adam Linkous, and Jake Schirmer each added a hit.
With the win, Blacksburg finished the regular season with a 13-7 record and 2-3 in the Conference. As the 5th seed, they will play #3 seed Patrick County on Monday in Stuart, VA. The two teams that reach the conference final will advance to the regional tournament.
