Hidden Valley visited Blacksburg on Saturday for a make up game of the originally scheduled game that was rained out the week before. The Titans had revenge on their minds for the 10-2 rout they suffered at the hands of the Bruins early in the season. Blacksburg, meanwhile, needed a win for any hopes of a 1 or 2 seed in the conference 32 Tournament.
Both teams failed to score in the first inning. Morgan McCoy reached based on a single, but was stranded.
Hidden Valley jumped on the Bruins in the top of the 2nd, scoring seven runs to take a commanding 7-0 lead. The Titans pounded out five hits, but were also aided by three Bruin fielding errors and two walks.
Blacksburg fought back in the bottom half of the frame, scoring two runs to narrow Hidden Valley’s lead to 7-2. Adam Linkous started off the inning by drawing a walk and then Jake Verniel was HBP. A player was caught stealing for the first out of the inning. Jake Schirmer singled was followed by an RBI single from Tyler Davis, which scored Verniel (7-1). Schirmer advanced all the way to 3B on a throwing error by Hidden Valley, and then scored on a wild pitch (7-2). A fly out and ground out ended the potentially big inning for the Bruins.
After a scoreless third inning, Hidden Valley added another run to extend their lead to 8-2 in the top of the 4th inning. The Bruins immediately responded with two runs of their own to cut into the Titan lead 8-4. Verniel led off with a bunt single, followed by a ground ball single by Jake Schirmer. Davis then laid down a bunt of his own to load the bases with no outs. Verniel scored on a wild pitch (8-3), while Schirmer and Davis each advanced a base. After a Bruin strike out, Seb Cianelli successfully bunted his way on base, scoring Schirmer from 3B (8-4). However, two flyouts ended the inning for the Bruins and stranded the two runners.
Neither team scored in the 5th or 6th innings as the score remained 8-4. After the Bruins held the Titans scoreless in the top of the 7th, they attempted to rally, but came up short. McCoy led off the bottom of the 7th with a ground ball single and Ben Ansrom followed with a walk to put two Bruins on base with no outs. However, a strike out, a fly out, and ground out ended the potential rally.
Offensively, Blacksburg scored four runs on eight hits. Morgan McCoy, Jake Schirmer, and Tyler Davis were each 2/3. Seb Cianelli and Jake Verniel were 1/4 and 1/3 respectively. Cianelli and Davis each had an RBI.
Defensively, the Bruins committed nine errors, as Hidden Valley only scored one earned run. Morgan McCoy pitched one inning, giving up four hits and one earned run. He had one walk and one strike out. Jake Verniel pitched six innings in relief, scattering two hits and walked three hitters.
With the loss, the Bruins fall to 10-7 overall, and 1-4 in the conference standings.
