Blacksburg Varsity Beats Pulaski 14-4

Bruin Bats Explode for 21 Hits

 

Blacksburg traveled to Pulaski for the second game of the season series and the Bruins pounded out 21 hits in route to a 14-4 win via the ten run rule. 

Blacksburg wasted little time, scoring six runs in the top of the 1st inning to take a quick 6-0 lead.  Seb Cianelli led off the game with a single and Morgan McCoy followed with a double to put two runners on base.  Ben Anstrom singled to score Cianelli and then a runner was picked off a base for the first out of the inning.  Ethan Goforth singled, scoring McCoy (2-0).  Adam Linkous continued the offensive assault with Blacksburg’s fifth straight hit.  Jake Verniel then hit an RBI single, scoring Goforth (3-0).  Linkous also scored on the play (4-0).  Jake Schirmer reached base on an infield error, and then Tyler Davis recorded Blacksburg’s 7th hit of the inning, a single to LF, which scored Verniel and Schirmer (6-0).  Andrew Roberson singled past 3B, but then a strike out and ground out ended the inning for the Bruins.

Pulaski picked up a run in the bottom of the first to narrow the lead to 6-1. 

Blacksburg scored four more runs in the top of the 3rd to extend their lead to 10-1.  Davis and Roberson led off with singles and then Cianelli hit and two RBI double (8-1) and cleared the bases.  Sec advanced to 3B on a passed ball and after McCoy drew a walk, Ben Anstrom hit an RBI single, scoring both runners (10-1).  The Bruins then were retired in consecutive order to end the inning.

The Bruins would tack on four more runs in the top of the 5th.  McCoy and Anstrom started the inning with singles and then Goforth hit a two RBI double to score both runners (12-1).  Linkous followed with a single to LF, scoring Anstrom with the RBI (13-1).  After a line out, a runner was caught stealing home and then Davis followed with another single, scoring Schirmer (14-1).  Roberson hit a single to CF and Cianelli was HBP to load the bases, but a Bruin struck out to end the inning with a 14-1 lead.

The Cougars attempted to fight back in the bottom of the 5th, scoring three runs, but came up short as the game ended 14-4 via the ten run rule.   

Offensively, Blacksburg was led by Tyler Davis, who was 4/4 with three RBIs.  Ben Anstrom was 3/4 with two RBIs, while Seb Cianelli, Morgan McCoy, Ethan Goforth, Adam Linkous, and Jake Verniel added two hits each.  McCoy scored three runs. 

Tyler Davis got the win on the mound, pitching 4 2/3 innings, and giving up just one earned run on four hits.  He walked three batters and struck out five. 

Ethan Goforth pitched 1/3 of an inning in relief, giving up one hit.

With the win, the Bruins improved to 10-6 on the season
