Bruins Bats Held to 5 Hits

The Blacksburg JV Team hosted Cave Spring JV on Tuesday at the Old BHS Field.  The Knights got out to a quick start and never looked back in recording the 6-2 win.  The Bruins fought back briefly, but it wasn’t enough gain ground on Cave Spring's lead.

Both teams were scoreless in the 1st inning.  Starting Blacksburg pitcher, CJ Linares, retired the Knights in consecutive order on just seven pitches.  Linares got on base by error in the bottom half of the inning, but was stranded.

Cave Spring jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the 2nd.  The Knights added a run in the top of the 3rd to lead 3-0.  Blacksburg was retired in consecutive order in the bottom of the 2nd and in the bottom of the 3rd, Camden Wise reached 1B via an error, but was stranded.

Linares and relief pitcher Jamye Bibbins combined to keep the Knights scoreless in the top of the 4th.  Cave Spring loaded the bases, but Bibbins forced a flyout and line out to get the Bruins out of the jam.

In the bottom of the 4th, Blacksburg got their bats going to score two runs to cut the Cave Spring lead to 3-2.  Linares led off the inning with a single to CF and then Hunter Radford reached on an infield error by Cave Spring.  Drew Babcock was inserted to courtesy run for Radford.  Brad Shelton singled to CF to load the bases for the Bruins and there were still no outs.  Unfortunately, the next Bruin hit into a double play, but it was enough to bring two runs home….Linares from 3B and then Babcock from 2B on a throwing error.  A fly out ended the potentially big inning for Blacksburg.

Cave Spring added two more runs in the top of the 5th to extend their lead to 5-2.   Camden Wise led off the bottom of the 5th with a single, but was stranded.

Cave Spring picked up on additional insurance run in the top of the 6th for a 6-2 lead.  Blacksburg briefly threatened in the bottom of the 7th when with two outs, Wise got his second hit of the night, a single to RF.  Jordan Shockley then singled to put two Bruins on base.  Justin Snyder drew a walk to load the bases for the potential exciting finish, but then a fly out ended the inning for Blacksburg.

CJ Linares pitched 3 1/3 innings, scattering four hits and giving up two earned runs.  He walked six and struck out four batters.  Jayme Bibbins pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief.  He gave up one hit, one earned run, walked two batters, and struck out one Knight.  Brad Shelton pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief, holding Cave Spring scoreless.  He gave up two hits, did not walk anyone, and struck one batter out.

Offensively, Blacksburg scored two runs off five hits and one walk.  Camden Wise led the Bruins in going 2/3.  CJ Linares, Brad Shelton, and Jordan Shockley each added a hit.

Head Coach Jonathan Hagee said, “We’re hitting the ball fairly well, but right at people. We squared some balls up and if they had fallen, it could have changed the game, but we hit them right at somebody.  Our effort was there, we prepared well, but sometimes you go through spells like this were you just can’t get a ball to fall for you.  You have to also give Cave credit as they played well."

"We have to play better defensively, however.  Our pitchers are pitching well enough to win and we’ve got to help them with better defense.  We’re young in some spots and guys are seeing things for the first time and we need to grow.  We’ve been on the losing end of some tough games and we need to make plays.  And, when we do, we’ll win more games.  It’s only a matter of time before it kicks in for us.  As of late, we’ve had some slow stars out of the gate, whereas early in the season, it was just the opposite.  We have to help ourselves in order to take the pressure off the mound."

"I’m really proud of our kids.  We need to just keep battling."

The JV Bruins are now 5-4 on the season and travel to historic Salem on Friday for a DH, a regularly scheduled game and then a make up from earlier in the season.
