The Blacksburg JV team traveled to Christiansburg for the first of two meetings with their cross county rivals. The Blue Demons came away with a hard fought 1-0 victory, despite the great pitching of Bruins Brad Shelton, who held Christiansburg to just 6 hits. For the second game in a row, the Bruins bats were silent, this time with just one hit.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 4th when a Christiansburg batter singled with one out. The base runner stole 2B, and then scored on a second single.
Blacksburg was held to one hit in the game. The Bruins, Wesley McCoy, singled in the top of the 2nd with two outs, but was stranded.
Brad Shelton pitched the entire game for Blacksburg, scattering six hits and giving up just one earned run. He walked two batters and struck out seven Blue Demons.
Head Coach Jonathan Hagee said, “There’s not a lot I can say about this one. Two guys pitched very well. I’m really proud of how Brad pitched. He only gave up six hits and one run. What a tremendous effort. He pitched more than well enough to win and it’s a shame he didn’t get a W. Defensively, we made our plays. Our effort was there. We struggled offensively, but we have to give credit where credit is due; the opposing pitcher had a really good game. They came after us given how we did against them last year, so that shows the respect they have for our program.”
With the loss, the Blacksburg JV team is now 5-3 on the season.
