Game Ends After 6 Innings Via Ten Run Rule

Blacksburg traveled to Salem on Wednesday to face one of its old River Ridge opponents, the Salem Spartans.  The Spartans jumped on the Bruins early and never looked back as they ended the game in six innings via the ten run rule.

After holding visiting Blacksburg scoreless in top of the 1st inning, Salem scored a run to take a 1-0 lead.  A walk, and then a Bruin infield error put two runners on base.  After another runner reached on a fielder’s choice, Salem singled to LF to plate their run.  After one full inning of play, the Spartans led 1-0.

Blacksburg was held scoreless through three innings of play.  Jake Verniel had a single in the top of the 3rd to lead off the inning, but was stranded.

Salem had a big inning in the bottom of the 2nd, plating five additional runs to take a 6-0 lead.  A two RBI triple was the highlight of the inning for the Spartans.  Salem loaded the bases at the end of the inning, but Blackburg’s Ethan Goforth forced a fielder’s choice to Bruin's SS, Morgan McCoy, to get out of the jam and limit the damage.

Blacksburg picked up a run in the top of the 4th inning. McCoy led of with a single to 3B, and then Goforth was HBP.  Adam Linkous hit a ground ball single to load the bases for the Bruins.  Jake Schirmer hit a sacrifice fly, scoring McCoy (6-1), but a runner was thrown out advancing on the play, and then the next batter flied out to end the promising inning for Blacksburg.

Salem was held scoreless in the bottom of the 4th as Goforth retired the side in order in just 8 pitches.

The Bruins produced a couple of base runners in the top of the 5th, but could not score. Tyler Davis led off with a single to LF and then Verniel reached on an error to put two Bruins on base with no outs.  After two consecutive outs, McCoy recorded his second hit of the night to load the bases again for the Bruins.  However a ground out back to the pitcher ended potential big inning for Blacksburg.

Goforth held the Spartans scoreless in the bottom of the 5th.  A lead off single did put a batter on 1B, but he was stranded as Goforth struck out the next batter, and then forced a fly out and a line out.

In the bottom of the 6th, Linkous reached base on an infield error, but was stranded.

Salem ended the game in the bottom of the 6th as the Spartans produced seven hits to score five runs and end the game 11-1 via the ten run rule.

Offensively, Blacksburg produced one run off five hits and one walk.  Morgan McCoy led the Bruins at the plate, going 2/3.  Adam Linkous, Tyler Davis, and Jake Verniel each added a hit.  Jake Schirmer had an RBI.

Ethan Goforth pitched to all but two batters for Blacksburg.  He scattered ten hits over 5 2/3 innings, striking out one and walking four batters.  Ten of the eleven runs were earned.   Michael Olszewski pitched in relief in the bottom of the 6th.  He faced two batters and gave up two hits.

With the loss, Blacksburg falls to 7-5 on the season.  The Bruins host Conference 32 foe Hidden Valley in a crucial conference game on Friday.  The game is the second meeting of the two game season series, and counts towards the Conference 32 tournament seeding process.
