Bruins Hit 3 Home runs in the 18 Hit Offensive Attack

The Blacksburg Varsity visited Giles in attempt to sweep Giles in their season series with the Spartans.  The game got off to a slow start for the Bruins as Giles jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings of play.

In the top of the 3rd, however, Blacksburg fought back to tie the score 2-2.  With one out, Ethan Goforth doubled to CF and Adam Linkous singled, scoring Goforth.  Linkous advanced all the way to 3B on a throwing error by Giles.  After a strike out, Tyler Davis hit a ground ball single, scoring Linkous, which tied the game.  Ben Anstrom singled, but he and Davis were stranded.

Starting pitcher Jake Verniel kept Giles scoreless in the bottom of 3rd, facing just four batters.

In the top of the 4th, Blacksburg blew the game open, with good hitting and taking advantage of several Giles errors as the Bruins scored seven runs to take the lead 9-2.  Verniel led off the inning by drawing a walk.  Seb Cianelli sacrificed him to 2B, and then Morgan McCoy walked to put the two runners on base.  Verniel stole 3B and then stole home on a passed ball error by the catcher and gave the lead to Blacksburg (3-2).  Back at the top of the order and after a strike out, Adam Linkous was intentionally walked and Jake Schirmer drew a walk to load the bases.  McCoy scored on a passed ball (4-2) and then Davis hit a three run HR to clear the bases and drive the score to 7-2.  Anstrom kept the two out rally going with a double to CF.  Michael Olszewski reached by a Giles infield error, which allowed Anstrom to score from 2B (8-2).  Verniel singled in his second at bat of the inning, scoring Olzewski (9-2), who had advanced to 2B on a Giles throwing error.  A fly out ended the inning for Blacksburg, but not before taking a commanding lead.

Ethan Goforth was inserted to pitch and kept Giles scoreless in the bottom of the 4th, retiring the side in order.  Despite a lead off single by McCoy in the top of the 5th and a single by Linkous, both were stranded.

Giles picked up a run in the bottom of the 5th on a one out single, two walks, and another single to narrow the score to 9-3.

Blacksburg blew the game open in the top of the 6th, scoring nine additional runs (18-3).  Davis led off the inning with a single to LF and then Anstrom walked.  Olszewski reached by an error, which allowed Davis to score (10-3). Verniel then singled, scoring Anstrom and Olszewski (12-3).  Cianelli drew a walk, advancing Verniel to 2B.  McCoy then hit the Bruins second three run HR of the game, and cleared the bases (15-3).  Goforth was HBP and then pinch hitter Isaac Johnston, hit a single to LF.  After two strike outs, Anstrom hit the third Bruin HR (18-3) of the game.  A strike out ended the inning for Blacksburg.

Adam Linkous pitched the last inning in relief, giving up two singles but prevented the Spartans from scoring and end the game for the Bruins.

Head Coach Danny Shouse wasn’t particularly pleased with his team’s slow start.  “We didn’t play well, but we got what we needed to get done.  We’re down 2-0 and I’m like ‘here we go.’  We have to approach every team like it’s big team.  A W is a W but we yesterday was not a good day. It’s going to get nothing but get harder from here on.  We’re going to travel 581 miles next week on a bus.  It’s time to get serious. “

“Our pitching was ok.  Nothing great, but we got it done.  Adam is a focused player.  There are about 3 or 4 of them like that.  We need all of them to be like that. Tyer and Ben hit the ball very well, but we’re playing in a phone booth up there in Giles.  The wind was horrendous up there, 20-25 mph…Blowing straight out."

“The only way we will lose is if we beat ourselves.  No one will beat us this year.  We will have to beat ourselves.  Just about did it yesterday until we woke up.”  We will be fine and they have today of of the Easter weekend.  I’m glad yesterday is over with."

Offensively, Blacksburg scored 18 runs on 14 hits.  The Bruins were led by Ben Anstrom, who went 3/3 with a HR, 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored.  Tyler Davis was 3/4 with a HR, 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored.  Morgan McCoy, Adam Linkous, and Jake Verniel added two hits each.  McCoy had 3 RBIs.

Jake Verniel pitched the first three innings for Blacksburg, scattering five hits, walking two, and striking out four batters. Giles scored two earned runs.  Ethan Goforth pitched the 4th and 5th innings to earn the win on the mound for Blacksburg.  He gave up two hits, walked two, struck out three batters and one earned run.   Adam Linkous pitched the 6th and final inning for the Bruins.  He gave up two hits, walked one batter and did not allow a run.
With the win, Blacksburg Varsity improves to 4-0 on the season.  They play in a four-team tournament in Jefferson Forest next week.
