The Blacksburg O-Zone All-Stars faced the Pulaski West All-Stars in the quarterfinals of the Dixie District 3 All-Star Tournament. Blacksburg sent one of it’s three 12 year olds, Eric Heinze, to the mound. In the top of the 1st, Heinze retired the side in consecutive order.
In the bottom of the 1st, Blacksburg struck first, scoring two runs to take a quick 2-0 lead. Tyler VandeVord led off and reached base on an error. Eric Heinze then hit a single, advancing VandeVord to 3B, and then he scored on an error by a Pulaski outfielder. Heinze moved to 2B on the play. Aiden Seeley then hit a RBI triple, scoring Heinze. Logan Vance reached on a fielder’s choice as a runner was tagged out at home. A ground out and strike out ended the inning for Blacksburg, but not before they grabbed the early momentum.
Radford scored two runs in the top of the 2nd to tie the game at 2-2.
In the bottom of the 2nd, Levi Linkous led off with a single. Colin Wilson followed with a single, advancing Linkous to 2B. After an out, Scott Hudson reached base by drawing a walk to load the bases. Leeander Wilkes reached base on an infield error, scoring Linkous and Blacksburg took a 3-2 lead. A strike out and pop out ended the inning for Blacksburg as they left the bases loaded.
Neither team would score in the 3rd or 4th inning as the scored remained 3-2. In the bottom of the 3rd, Heinze led off with a single and then Vance reached base on a fielder’s choice, forcing Heinze out at 2B. Blaize Butler reached on an infield error, advancing Vance to 2B. A fielder’s choice forced Vance out at 3B for the last out of the inning.
In the bottom of the 4th, Linkous reached 1B on an infield error and then Colin Wilson reached on fielder’s choice, forcing Linkous out at 2B. Ethan Young then reached 1B on a fielder’s choice, forcing Wilson out at 2B. A fielder’s choice forced Young out at 2B to end the inning.
In the top of the 5th, Pulaski County West rallied, scoring three runs to take their first lead in the game 5-3.
In the bottom of the 5th, Heinze led off with a single and then advanced to 2B on a wild pitch. Seeley reached 1B on a dropped third strike to put two Blacksburg runners on base with no outs. A line drive hit back to the pitcher produced a double play for two quick outs. Butler then reached 1B on an infield error, but an fly out ended the once promising inning.
Blacksburg pitcher Tyler VandeVord held Radford scoreless in the top of the 6th. In the bottom half of the frame, Levi Linkous led off by reaching 1B on an error. Wilson then hit a single, advancing Linkous to 3B. With no outs and runners at 1st and 3B, Wilson stole 2B to put runners on 3B and 2B. After a strike out, VandeVord reached 1B on a fielder’s choice as a runner was thrown out at home. Heinze then hit a single to load the bases. However, a strike out ended the game for Blacksburg.
Eric Henize pitched the first four innings, scattering five hits and striking out one. Tyler VandeVord pitched the last two innings, scattering three hits, and striking out two.
Offensively, Blacksburg was led by Eric Heinze, who was 4/4 with one runs scored and one RBI. Colin Wilson was 2/3. Levi Linkous and Aiden Seeley each had a hit.
