First Scrimmage of the Season

The 2014 Blacksburg Bruins offically began their season as the Bruiins participated in an early season jamboree in Christiansburg, VA., playing Turner Ashby and Glenvar in back-to-back games.  The Bruins lost the first game 5-3, but rebounded and won the second 5-2.

In the first game, the Bruins took a 2-1 lead in the third, scoring runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings.  After drawing a walk in the 2nd inning, Jake Verniel worked his way to 3rd after a Turner Ashby error advanced him to 2B.  He then stole 3B and scored when Dylan Surface hit an RBI single.

In the 3rd, Jack Madigan led off with a single, stole 2B, and advanced to 3B on a Tyler Davis bunt for a single.  Adam Linkous hit a RBI sac fly to score Madigan to put the Bruins on top, 2-1.

Blacksburg added another run in the 4th to extend their lead to 3-1.  With two outs, Surface reached on an error, and then Morgan McCoy doubled, advancing Surface to 3B.  A called balk scored Surface from 3B.

Turner Ashby would rally in the 4th, scoring four runs to take a 5-3 lead.  A single, double and single got things going for the Knights.  A sac fly and then another single scored two runs, followed by a batter hit by a pitch and four infield errors.

Blacksburg failed to score in the 5th, with Turner Ashby winning 5-3.

Starting pitcher Jake Verniel pitched two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two batters.  Tyler Davis pitched the next two innings, striking out two batters.

Offensively, Blacksburg had five players with a hit:  Morgan McCoy, Jack Madigan, Tyler Davis, Adam Linkous, and Dylan Surface.

In the second game of the jamboree, Blacksburg beat Glenver 5-2.  Neither team scored in the first inning, but in the 2nd, Glenvar jumped out on top 1-0.  In the bottom of the 2nd, the Bruins immediately responded, tying the game 1-1.  Jake Verniel led off by drawing a walk and advanced to 3B on a error and scored on a sacrifice by Ben Anstrom.

Glenvar added a run in the top of the 3rd, re-taking the lead 2-1.  The Bruins responded again with three runs of their own to put themselves back on top 4-2.  With one out, Jack Madigan singled to RF and stole 2B.  Adam Linkous doubled off the RF wall, scoring Madigan.  A ground out advanced Linkous to 3B.  Verniel then had a infield single, scoring Linkous.  Ethan Goforth drew a walk and then Anstrom singled to CF, scoring Verniel from 2B.  A player was thrown out on the bases, ending the inning and scoring threat.

Glenvar was held scoreless in the 4th, as P Morgan McCoy only gave up one single and struck out one.

In the bottom of the 4th, Blacksburg added to their lead, picking up a run to put the score at 5-2.  Dylan Surface led of by drawing a walk, but was caught stealing.  After a strikeout, McCoy was HBP and then stole 2B.  Madigan singled to LF, scoring McCoy from 2B.  Adam Linkous was HBP and then a strike out ended the inning.

Morgan McCoy, who pitched the last two innings, finished the 5th by going three up and three down while striking out one. Jack Madigan pitched the first three innings, getting the win.  He gave up four hits and struck out three.

Offensively, Madigan led Blacksburg with two hits, going 2/3. Morgan McCoy, Adam Linkous, Jake Verniel, and Ben Anstrom each had one hit.

After the two games, Head coach Danny Shouse was pleased with how his team played.  "I was pleased how we played overall, but we are not hitting how we are capable of yet.  We struggled a bit in the field, but we've only been outside for two days so I really can't complain.  I think we will be better this year than last year even though we lost two key players....We've gained that and more back through rising players and our off season workouts."

The Blacksburg Bruins have their third and final scrimmage of the pre-season on Wednesday, March 12th @ Patrick Henry. The Bruins kick off their season on March 19th vs. Giles @ home.
