Blacksburg Minors Start Off to Strong in District 3 All-Stars

Bruins win 11-1 in 4 innings

 

On a beautiful evening in Radford, Va., the Blacksburg Minors began the 2013 All-Star Campaign with a win, beating Patrick County 11-1 in four innings.  Tyler Vandevord got the win on the mound, pitching three innings, allowing just one hit and one run.  Sam Helton finished in relief, pitching one inning and allowing just one hit.  

After VandeVord held Patrick scoreless in the top of the first, the Bruins got thier offense started quickly, scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the frame.  Lead off hitter Parker Epperley got things going with a single, followed by Sam Helton hitting a single, which advanced Epperley to 2nd.  Tyler VandeVord hit a single, loading the bases.  Then, Bennett Shealor came through with a big, hard line drive single, scoring Epperley and re-loading the bases.  Helton would then score on a passed ball, the other runners advanced one base as well.  Aiden Seeley hit a single, scoring VandeVord and Shealor advanced to 3rd.  With a 1st and 3rd situation, Seeley stole 2B.  Shealor scored on an error by the pitcher, and Seeley advanced to 3B.  Ryan Creehan then drew a walk to get himself on base.  After an out, Logan Vance was HBP.  Two consecutive outs then ended the inning, but not before Blacksburg would lead 5-0 after just one inning.

Patrick County would respond with a run of their own in the top of the 2nd to narrow the score to 5-1.  

However, the Bruins bounced right back and scored another run to extend their lead 6-1.  With two outs, Blackburg's Joe Bears drew a walk.  He then advanced to 2B on a passed ball.  Parker Epperley got his 2nd hit of the game with a double, scoring Bears.  A pop up ended the inning.  

VandeVord kept Patrick scoreless in the top of the 3rd, striking out the side in consecutive order.

Blacksburg scored another run in the bottom of the 3rd to extend their lead to 7-1.  VandeVord led off with a double, and then moved to third on an errant throw.  After an out, VandeVord scored on a passed ball.   Two consecutive outs ended the inning.

On the mound, Sam Helton entered the game in the top of the 4th, giving up just one hit and kept Patrick scoreless.

In the bottom half of the frame, Blacksburg would go to work again offensively.  Logan Vance hit a hard grounded for a single to lead off the inning.  Scott Hudson followed with a hard line drive single, advancing Vance to 2B.  Vance and Hudson each advanced a base on a passed ball.  Vance would later score on a passed ball, while Hudson moved to 3B.  After an out, Hudson scored on an error by the catcher.  Parker Epperley then registered his 3rd hit of the game with a single.  Sam Helton followed with a single, advancing Epperley to 2B.  Tyler VandeVord hit a hard grounder, which was also his third hit of the game, scoring Epperley.  Helton scored on a error by an outfielder, scoring the 11th and final run of the game. The game ended via the 10 run rule after four innings with the final score of 11-1.

Offensively, Blacksburg was led by Parker Epperley and Tyler VandeVord, who were both 3/3.  Sam Helton added two hits, going 2/3 while Bennett Shealor, Aiden Seeley, and Scott Hudson were each 1/2.  Logan Vance was 1/1.  In just four innings at the plate, Blacksburg piled up 11 hits and had 4 RBIs.  

The Blacksburg Minors advance in the tournament to play Christiansburg at 2pm on Saturday in Radford.
