Blacksburg Middle School visited Franklin County on Tuesday, April 30th for DH between the two teams. Blacksburg came ready to play as they beat FC 15-4, but dropped the second game 8-7.
In the first game, Blacksburg erupted for 10 runs in the first inning. Sebi Cianelli led off the game with a single, followed by Justin Snyder drawing a walk. After an out, Hunter Radford drew a walk to load the bases. Cianelli scored on a passed ball for the first run of the inning, while the other runners each advanced a base. On a ground out, Snyder scored and Radford advanced to 3B. Brad Shelton drew a walk to re-load the bases. Chris Wysocki was inserted as a courtesy runner for Shelton. Will Justus then hit a hard RBI single, scoring Wysocki and re-loaded the bases yet again. Davis Roberson, Sebi Cianelli, and Justin Snyder all drew consecutive walks, scoring Davis, Madigan, and Justus….And re-loading the bases with each walk. Ryan Anderson then hit a two RBI single, scoring Roberson and Cianelli. Snyder scored on a passed ball, and then Hunter Radford drew a walk. CJ Linares drew a walk to re-load the bases. But a fly out ended the inning, stranding all three runners and leaving bases loaded. However, Blacksburg would lead 10-0 after just one half inning of play.
Franklin County scored a run in the 1ST and 2nd inning.
Blacksburg scored five more runs in the top of the 3rd. After a lead off out, Justin Snyder drew a walk. After a 2nd out, Hunter Radford hit a double, scoring Snyder. Radford would steal 3B and then score on a passed ball. CJ Linares drew a walk and advanced to 2B when Brad Shelton was HBP. Blake Davis drew a walk to load the bases. Jared Madigan then hit a hard two RBI single, scoring Linares and Shelton. Will Justus reached on an infield error, scoring Davis. A strike out ended the inning.
Franklin picked up two runs in the bottom of the 4th to close the game out and make the final score 15-4.
Brad Shelton was the winning pitcher for Blacksburg. He pitched one inning, scattering two hits and giving up one earned run.
Offensively, Blacksburg was led by Will Justus, who was 2/3 on the day, with 1 run scored and 2 RBI. Justin Snyder scored 3 runs and Jared Madigan had 3 RBI for the Bruins.
In game two of the DH, Blacksburg led off, but was retired in consecutive order. However, Franklin County came out swinging the bats, picking up three runs in the inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead after one inning of play. Starting pitcher Justin Snyder pitched well, but was plagued by errors in the field. FC hit a lead off single and then the runner stole 2B. Snyder retired the next batter via ground out while the runner advanced to 3B. The next batter drew a walk to put two runners on and with a first and third situation, the runner took 2B. A single scored a second run of the inning and a passed ball caused the runner to advance to 3B. An infield error allowed a batter to reach base and the run to score from 3B. Snyder retired the next two batters by strike out and ground out to end the inning.
Blacksburg was held scoreless in the top of the 2nd, as the three batters were retired in consecutive order again.
Snyder picked up where he left off, facing just four batters, striking out one, and forcing a pop up and a line drive out.
Blacksburg finally got things going in the top of the 3rd, scoring two runs to narrow the gap to 3-2. Ryan Anderson led off and was HBP and stole 2B. After a strike out and a ground out, Anderson advanced to 3B. Will Justus reached on an error, scoring Anderson. Justus would steal 2B, take third on a passed ball and then steal home to plate the second run of the inning. A ground out ended the inning.
Franklin County picked up three more runs in the bottom half of the 3rd.
Blacksburg fought back, scoring two runs in the top of the 4th. With one out, Chris Wysocki reached on an error. Davis Roberson reached on an error and was substituted with Jared Madigan. Madigan then stole 2B. After a strike out, Sebi Cianelli hit a hard RBI single, scoring Madigan. Cianelli then stole 2B, and Justin Snyder hit a RBI single, scoring Cianelli. Snyder advanced all the way to 3B on good base running after FC threw the ball around a bit. The next Bruin grounded out to end the inning and strand Snyder at 3B.
FC would score two more runs in the bottom of the 4th to extend their lead to 8-4. But, the Bruins did not give up and attempted a big rally in the top of the 5th, scoring three runs. CJ Linares led off with a single, and the Blake Davis followed with another single. Will Justus drew a walk to load the bases. Hunter Radford grounded out, but picked up a RBI, scoring Linares from 3B. Wysocki followed with another ground out, but scored both Davis and Justus with the 2 RBI out. Jared Madigan then drew a walk and with the tying run on base, a Bruin grounded out to end the inning and the game. The Bruins came up just a little short, losing 8-7.
Offensively, Blacksburg was led by Chris Wysocki who had 2 RBIs. Sebi Cianelli, Justin Snyder, CJ Linares, and Blake Davis all had hits for Blacksburg. Will Justus scored two runs for the Bruins.
With the split, Blacksburg Middle School now stands at 13-8 and plays Forest in a DH later this week.
