Blacksburg Middle School visited Chrisitansburg Middle on Thursday May 2nd for a double header featuring two of the better MS teams in the area. With each team having beaten the other previously (CB-2, B- 1), this last DH was the “grudge match” for the season.
The first game of the DH was a classic pitcher’s duel, with Blacksburg winning 1-0. Brad Shelton went the distance for Blacksburg, pitching all 5 innings, giving up just 3 hits and no runs. He struck out six.
Ironically, Blacksburg would score a run in the their first at bat in the top of the 1st, which would be all they would need to beat the Blue Demons. Sebi Cianelli led off the game, and was HBP. After an out, Ryan Anderson hit a double that advanced Cianelli to 3B. Hunter Radford then hit an RBI ground out, scoring Cianelli. Anderson moved to 3B on the play. A fly out ended the inning, stranding Anderson at 3rd.
Brad Shelton would single in the 2nd inning, but was stranded. It would be the only other hit of the game for Blacksburg.
Offensively, Ryan Anderson was the hero with the big double in the 1st inning, scoring Cianelli. Blacksburg was held to just two hits. A. Perkins was the losing pitcher for Christiansburg.
In the second game of the DH, Blacksburg continued it’s pitching dominance with Jared Madigan going the distance, beating Christiansburg 3-0. Madigan surrendered just 2 hits, struck out 3 and walked 3, over 5 innings pitched.
Blacksburg went to work quickly in the second game, scoring a run in the top of the 1st to jump out on toop 1-0. Sebi Cianelli led off with a line drive double. He advanced to 3B on a passed ball. After an out, Ryan Anderson hit an RBI ground out, scoring Cianelli. The inning would end with two consecutive outs.
CJ Linares led off with a single in the top of the 2nd. Blake Davis reached base on a FC, forcing Linares at 2B. After an out, Jared Madigan hit a single, advancing Davis to 2B. A line drive ended the inning, stranding Madigan and Davis.
In the top of the 3rd, Chris Wysocki led off with a single, followed by a Sebi Cianelli single, advancing Wysocki to 2B. After an out, Ryan Anderson hit a single to load the bases. Hunter Radford then drew an RBi walk, scoring Wysocki and re-loaded the bases. CJ Linares delivered a hard single, scoring Cianelli , which also re-loading the bases. A double play ended the inning, and stranded two runners. However, Blacksburg picked up two more runs to extend their lead to 3-0.
Christiansburg made a pitching change in the top of the 4th, and the new pitcher, N. Stoudt, kept Blacksburg in check or hitless for the last two innings.
Jared Madigan was the winning pitcher, pitching all 5 innings and giving up no runs and allowing just 2 hits. Nathan Meadows was the losing pitcher for Christiansburg, allowing 8 hits, 3 earned runs, striking out 2, and walking 1 over three innings of pitching.
With the sweep, Blacksburg Middle improves to 15-10 on the season. They travel to Tazewell on Saturday.
