Knights Efficient, Scoring 8 Runs on Just 8 Hits

Blacksburg traveled to Cave Spring on Tuesday to face the Knights in River Ridge District play.  Cave Spring was very efficient on the day, scoring 8 runs on just 8 hits.  Blacksburg matched the Knights with 8 hits of their own, but couldn't string enough consistency together to plate runs.

In the top of the 1st, Morgan McCoy led off with a single, and was forced out at 2nd on a fielder's choice.  Two consecutive outs ended the inning.

In the bottom of the 1st, Cave Spring exploded for 5 runs off 5 hits, a walk and an error.  Four of the hits came with two outs.  With one runner on and two outs, Cave Spring drew a walk, and then a single scoring two runs.  Then, a bunt single loaded the bases.  A single to LF scored two more runs.  A Blacksburg fielding error allowed another run to score, and then McCoy forced a fly out to end the inning.  After one complete inning, Cave Spring led 5-0.

Blacksburg sent four batters to the plate in the top of the 2nd, with Tyler Davis hitting a single.

Both pitchers were strong through the next inning and a half as both retired the side in the bottom of the 2nd and top of the 3rd.  In the bottom of the 3rd, McCoy only faced four batters, with one Knight singling.

The Bruins battled back in the top of the 4th, picking up two runs.  Thomas Hughes led off with a double and Jake Schirmer drew a walk.  Tyler Barry walked to load the bases.  After a fly out, Tyler Davis had an RBI single, scoring Hughes.  Jake Verniel then sacrificed home a run to plate the second run for Blacksburg.  However, a fly out ended the inning.

McCoy worked out of a jam in the 4th.  The lead off runner reached on an infield error.  After a walk, a batter was HBP, to load the bases.  A Cave Spring line drive was caught at 1B for the first out, and then the next batter flied out to LF and Blacksburg was able to double up the runner on 1B to stop any damage from occurring.

In the top of the 5th, McCoy led off with a single, followed by an Ethan Goforth Single. Dylan Turman was inserted as a courtesy runner for Goforth.  A runner was caught stealling 3B and then Thomas Hughes singled to RF.  However, the next Bruin hit into a ground ball double play to end the inning and scoring opportunity.

Both teams went three up and three down in the bottom of the 5th and top of the 6th.

In the bottom of the 6th, Cave Spring would add two more insurance runs to expand their lead to 8-2.  The lead off batter was HBP and then after two consecutive outs, a single scored the lead off runner who had advanced himself around the bases. A second player was HBP and advanced to 2B on a balk.  A Cave Spring single scored the runner from 2B.  A ground out ended the inning.

Blacksburg was retired in consecutive order to end the game in the top of the 7th.

With the loss, Blacksburg falls to 8-6 on the season and 1-3 in River Ridge District play.

Offensively, Blacksburg was led by Thomas Hughes and Tyler Davis, who were both 2/3.  Morgan McCoy was 2/4.

Blacksburg squares off vs. Pulaski at home on Friday, April 26th in River Ridge action.
