Blacksburg traveled to Salem on Thursday for their third game in three days. The game, originally scheduled for Friday, was moved up one day due to the threat of rain and possible rain out. The Bruins hitting slump continued, as Blacksburg only had 6 hits, but did produce efficiently, taking advantage of Salem's mistakes to score 4 runs.
In the top of the 1st, Morgan McCoy led the game off with a single to LF. Ethan Goforth reached on an error to put runners at 1B and 2B with no outs. However, the next Bruin hit into a DP, and then a fly out ended the inning.
Salem picked up their first run of the game in the bottom half of the inning to pull ahead 1-0. Lead off hitter Zach Mineroldi singled to CF and advanced to 2B on a sacrifice. A double to RF by Hunter Allen scored Mineroldi. The next Salem hitter reached on an infield error, but Thomas Hughes picked off the runner at first and then forced a ground out to 2B.
Not much offense was displayed over the next inning and a half, as Blacksburg only sent four batters to the plate, with Adam Linkous hitting a single. Hughes retired the Salem side in consecutive order, but the Bruins couldn’t capitalize, as the only runner Blacksburg could produce in the top of the 3rd, was an Ethan Goforth walk.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Salem plated its 2nd run of the game to extend their lead 2-0. Mineroldi led off with another single and after a strike out, a Hunger Allen single advanced Mineroldi to 3B. A sacrifice brought him home to score the run. Salem hit another single, but no damage was done as Thomas Hughes got the next runner to fly out.
Blacksburg continued to struggle offensively, as they were retired in consecutive order.
Hughes responded with as strong inning of his own, retiring Salem three up and three down.
In the top of the 5th, Blacksburg got its offense going, scoring three runs to take the lead 3-2. After an out, Alex Shimozono hit with a single and then Jake Verniel hit a single to put runners on 1st and 3rd. McCoy reached on a FC and the throw home was too late as Shimozono scored to put the Bruins on the board. After a strike out, McCoy advanced to 2B after a failed pickoff attempt and the error enabled Verniel to score. Thomas Hughes then doubled to LF, Scoring McCoy. The next Bruin was retired with a routine ground ball.
Salem responded with a run of their own to tie the game 3-3. Mineroldi led off with his 3rd hit of the game and after an out, Hunter Allen hit another RBI single, scoring Mineroldi. Hughes got out of the jam with a DP ball to McCoy/Davis/Shimozono.
Tyler Barry led off the top of the 6th by drawing a walk and Adam Linkous sacrificed him to 2B, and also reached on an error. Tyler Davis sacrificed both runners over one base. However, a strike out and ground out ended the scoring threat for Blacksburg.
Salem produced a lead off single in the bottom of the 6th, but Thomas Hughes strong pitching recorded three consecutive outs with a fly out and two strikeouts.
The Bruins took the lead again in the 7th on another error by Salem. Morgan McCoy singled to lead off the inning, and Ethan Goforth sacrificed McCoy to 2B. McCoy stole 3B and then scored on a Salem throwing error. Two groundouts ended the inning.
In the bottom of the 7th, Salem’s bats came alive, pounding out four hits to score 2 runs and win the game. A lead off single put a runner on 1B, Mineroldi singled for his 4th hit of the game to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. A Salem runner reached on a FC as the Bruins got the force out at 2B for the first out of the inning. Hunter Allen then recorded his fourth hit of the game to CF to score the game tying run for Salem. The next Salem batter singled to CF to plate the game winning run.
Offensively, Blacksburg was led by Morgan McCoy, who was 2/4 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. The Bruins had 4 additional hits; Hughes, Linkous, Shimozono, and Verniel. Two of Blacksburg’s four runs were earned. The Bruins had just one fielding error.
Salem had 12 hits and scored 5 runs, all earned. They had 5 fielding errors. Both Zach Mineroldi and Hunter Allen were 4/4. Allen had 3 RBIs.
With the loss, Blacksburg drops to 8-5 on the season and 1-2 in River Ridge play. Salem improves to 5-5 on the season and 2-0 in River Ridge play.
Blacksburg travels to Cave Spring on Tuesday, April 23rd for a 5:00 pm game while Salem travels to Christiansburg.
