Thomas Hughes Throws No Hitter in River Ridge Opener

Blacksburg’s Thomas Hughes got the Bruins River Ridge District play off to a strong start by throwing a no hitter on the mound, while his Bruin teammates responded with 10 unanswered runs to beat it’s NRV rival, Christiansburg 10-0.

Hughes got off to a strong start in the first, striking out the lead off hitter, and retiring the Blue Demons in consecutive order.

In the bottom of the 1st, the Bruins, who were still stinging from their loss to Lord Botetourt, took their frustration out on Christianburg, beating them up for six runs in their first at bat.  After a lead off out, Ethan Goforth drew a walk, and then Thomas Hughes singled, advancing Goforth to 2B.  Alex Pickrell singled to CF to load the bases.  Tyler Davis then drew a RBI walk to score Goforth and to re-load the bases.  Tyler Barry then hit a 2 RBI double to RF, scoring Hughes and Pickrell.  Alex Shimozono walked and Jake Schirmer hit a 2 RBI single to CF, scoring Barry and Shimozono.  A strike out and a ground ended the inning, but not before the Bruins took an early commanding 6-0 lead.

Hughes was dominant in the 2nd, striking out the side in consecutive order.

In the bottom of the 2nd, the Bruins picked up another run to extend their lead 7-0.  Ethan Goforth led off with a single and Dylan Turman was inserted as a courtesy runner.  After two ground outs which advanced Turman to 2B and then 3B, Tyler Davis drew his 2nd walk of the day.  After a failed pick off attempt at 1st, Turman scored on a throwing error at 1B.  Barry singled for his 2nd hit of the game, but a runner was thrown out at home to end the inning.

In the 3rd inning, Hughes struck out the lead off batter, and then a runner reached on an error.  A line out and strike out ended the inning.

In the bottom of the 3rd, the Bruins were retired in order via a strike out, and two groundouts.

Hughes continued his dominance in the 4th, retiring the side in order with a ground out and two fly outs.

In the bottom of the 4th, Blacksburg picked up three more runs to extend their lead to 10-0.  Morgan McCoy led off with a single and advanced to 2B on a wild pitch.   Ethan Goforth reached on a sac bunt., advancing McCoy to 3B.  McCoy scored on a wild pitch and Goforth advanced to 2B.  A ground out to 2B, advanced Goforth to 3B.  Goforth scored on an error by a Christiansburg infielder.  Alex Pickrell then singled to RF and Tyler Davis followed with a single to LF, advancing Pickrell to 2B.  Tyler Barry doubled to LF, scoring Pickrell and advancing Davis to 3B.   A fly out and strike out ended the inning, but Blacksburg pushed three runs across to make the score 10-0.

Very appropriately, Blacksburg Pitcher Thomas Hughes retired the side in order with a ground out, a strike out, and a ground out to preserve his no hitter, and end the game via the 10 run rule.

Hughes got the win, throwing just 68 pitches, 45 of which for strikes.  He struck out 7 Demon batters, and did not surrender a walk.

Offensively, Blacksburg was led by Tyler Barry, who was 3/3 with 3 RBIs.  Alex Pickrell was 2/3 with 2 runs scored.  Blacksburg had 10 total hits, drew 4 walks, and struck out 4 times.  Defensively, there was one error.

After the game, Head Coach Danny Shouse said, "We came out and mashed the baseball tonight!  What a job by Thomas Hughes on the Mound....With the no-no! Great game all the way around today."

With the win, Blacksburg improves to 8-2, and hosts Hidden Valley in a River Ridge match-up on Tuesday @ 5PM.
