After a week off due to the weather and Easter break, the Blacksburg Varsity traveled to Giles on Monday for a make up game with the Spartans. The Bruins kept going where they left off, winning 5-0.
Neither team got much offense going in the first inning as the game remained scoreless. However, in the top of the 2nd, Blacksburg would get the bats going to score two runs and jump out to a 2-0 lead. Jake Schirmer led of the inning with a hit, followed by Alex Shimozono singling to CF and advancing Schirmer to 3B. Schirmer would score on a Giles error, and put the first run up on the board. Dylan Turman was inserted as the courtesy runner for Shimozono. Ethan Goforth then singled to LF and Turman advanced to 2B. Jake Verniel hit a RBI double, scoring Turman, and advancing Goforth to 3B. After a ground out, Zach Craven was inserted as a courtesy runner for Goforth. Two consecutive outs ending the scoring threat, stranding Craven and Verniel.
Starting pitcher Alex Shimozono faced only 4 batters in the bottom half of the inning, walking one, and striking out two Spartans.
Neither team could get anything going in the 3rd as Blacksburg was three up and three down, while Shimozono only faced three batters in the bottom half of the inning.
In the top of the 4th, Blacksburg was very efficient, scoring another run to make the score 3-0. A lead off walk by Shimozono got things started, and then Dylan Turman was inserted as a courtesy runner. After two consecutive outs, leadoff hitter Morgan McCoy doubled to RF, scoring Turman. A flyout ended the inning.
A pitcher’s duel continued through the bottom of the 4th, the 5th & 6th inning, with neither team scoring. For the three innings, Blacksburg pitcher Alex Shimozono only faced 10 Giles batters.
In the top of the 7th, Blacksburg’s offense broke out, picking up 3 runs and extended their lead to 5-0. After a lead off out, Alex Pickrel doubled. Tyler Davis followed with a double, scoring Pickrell. After the 2nd Bruin out, which advanced Davis to 3B, Shimozono reached via an error, scoring Davis. Turman was again inserted as a courtesy runner. Ethan Goforth reached via an error and Sam Montgomery was inserted as courtesy runner for Goforth, the catcher. However, a ground out, ended the scoring threat, stranding the two Bruin runners.
In the bottom of the 7th, Alex Shimozono struck out the side to end the game and pick up the win. He scattered four hits over 7 innings, striking out eight and only walking four. The Bruins did have three errors.
"We played good enough to win, but we just seemed like we weren't focused. But a win is a win", commented Head Coach Danny Shouse after the game.
Offensively, Blacksburg was led by Alex Pickrell who was 3/4 on the day. The Bruins had ten hits, with seven players each having one hit.
With the win, Blacksburg improves to 6-1 and plays Radford in a regularly scheduled game on Wednesday at BHS.
