In it’s second game in consecutive days, Blacksburg JV traveled to Northside for a game that was postponed due to inclement weather earlier in the week. Unfortunately, the JV Bruins came up short, losing 13-3. Head JV Coach Thomas Reed said, “Northside came out and hit the ball. We have to eliminate errors and not give up easy plays. Today, we beat ourselves, facing a good team.”
Blacksburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Hal Hughes and Jacob Nottingham drew back-to-back walks, putting runners on 1B and 2B. After an out, Jack Madigan hit a 2 RBI double to score Hughes and Nottingham. He was stranded, however, after consecutive strikeouts.
In the bottom half of the inning, Northside quickly responded by scoring five runs to take the lead 5-2. A lead off single and then back-to-back doubles got things going for the Vikings, scoring two runs. After a strike out, another double and an error, scored two more Northside runs. Two more errors, scored another run as the Vikings batted around in the inning, with the lead off batter batting twice.
In the top of the 2nd, the Bruins went three up and three down.
In the bottom half of the inning, starting pitcher Michael Olszewski settled in and only faced four batters, giving up just one hit and forcing two ground outs and a fly ball.
In the top of the 3rd, the Bruins battled back, scoring a run to cut the lead to 5-3. After a lead off out, Andrew Roberson hit a single and came around to score on a ground ball and Northside error. The third Bruin batter flied out to end the inning.
Olszewski retired the Viking side in consecutive order in the bottom half of the inning, while Blacksburg went three up and three down in the top of the 4th.
In the bottom of the 4th, Olszewski faced five Northside batters. He got the first batter to fly out, and then retired two of the next four with a ground out and strike out. Northside did reach base after a batter was HBP and drawing a walk, but no runs scored.
Blacksburg went three up and three down in the top of the 5th. After a lead off out, Hal Hughes drew a walk, but was caught stealing 2B. The next Blacksburg hitter flied out to LF.
In the bottom of the 5th, Blacksburg made a pitching change. After a lead off out, Northside responded with consecutive singles and drawing a walk to load the bases. A 2 RBI single plated two runs for the Vikings. The next hitter, was HBP, to re-load the bases, and then back-to-back errors, scored three more runs. A 2 RBI double brought two more runs across the plate. At the end of five innings of play, the score was 13-3.
In the top of the 6th, Jack Madigan hit a double with one out. Sam Noble and Jacob Sparrow reached base on error. Blacksburg could not score as a runner was thrown out at 3B. Aaron Lucas then hit a single, but the next Bruin struck out, stranding three runners and ending the game via the 10 run rule.
Offensively, Blacksburg was led by Jack Madigan, who went 2/3 with two doubles.
With the loss, Blacksburg JV drops to 2-2 on the season. They host Patrick Henry on Tuesday, March 26th @ 4:30pm.
