Bruin Bats Come Alive With 12 Hits

The Blacksburg  Bruins hosted Patrick Henry on Wednesday, battling the Patriots for the 7-6 win.

Both teams wasted little time getting started offensively.  In the top of the first, the lead off batter for PH singled.  PH drew a walk, and then a player was HBP to load the bases. A RBI walk scorded the first run of the game.  Blacksburg starting pitcher, Alex Shimozono struck out the next batter to record the first out.  Another RBI walk pushed across the second run of the inning.  A heads up caught foul tip by Ethan Goforth recorded the second out.  A third RBI walk scored PH's third run, but, Shimozono was able to strike out the next batter to end the inning and get out of a bases loaded jam.

Blacksburg, however, immediately responded with three runs to tie the game.  Morgan McCoy led off with a single to the pitcher, and then Thomas Hughes doubled to LF, advancing McCoy to 3B.  Tyler Barry had an RBI single, scoring McCoy. After two ground outs, one of which scored Hughes, Jake Schirmer had an RBI single, scoring Barry.  However, the next Bruin batter struck out to end the inning.

Neither team would score in the 2nd inning.  PH drew two walks, but both runners were stranded.  In the bottom of the 2nd, Ethan Goforth led off with a single to LF. Alex Linkous was inserted as a courtsey runner.  Jake Verniel then singled to CF, advancing Linkous to 2B.  Morgan McCoy reached 1B on a FC, as PH got the runner at 3B.  Both Verniel and McCoy were stranded as the next two batters struck out and grounded out.

In the top of the 3rd, PH would hit two singles, but both runners were stranded as Shimozono was able to work his way out of the situation, recording a flyout, FC, and another fly out.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Blacksburg responded by picking up a run to take the lead 4-3.  With two outs, Jake Schirmer reached via an error.  Alex Shimozono was HBP.  Dylan Turman was inserted as a courtsey runner for Shimozono.  Ethan Goforth doubled to CF, scoring Shirmer, and moving Turman to 3B.  Jake Verniel was HBP to put runners at first and third, but the next Bruin batter flied out to end the inning.

Neither team would score in the 4th.  PH recorded a lead off single, but the runner was stranded as Shimozono recorded two flyouts and a strike out.

In the bottom of the 4th, Blacksburg put their first two runners on, but could not score.  Thomas Hughes was HBP, and then Tyler Barry drew a walk.  After a flyout, Tyler Davis reached 1B on a FC.  Jake Schirmer walked to load the bases, but then a ground out to the pitcher ended the scoring threat.

Blacksburg would make a pitching change in the top of the 5th, handing the ball to Tyler Davis.  Davis immediately recorded three up and three down.

In the bottom of the 5th, Blacksburg would score another run to pull ahead 5-3.  After a flyout, Jake Verniel drew a walk and then Morgan McCoy singled to RF, advancing Verniel to 3B.  With a 1B and 3B situation, Mccoy stole 2B.  Thomas Hughes then singled to CF, scoring Verniel and advancing McCoy to 3B. However, a hard line drive to 3B, doubled up the runner who was caught off the base, to end the inning.

In the top of the 6th, Patrick Henry battled back and score two runs to tie the game at 5-5.  A lead off single was followed by a sacrifice, advancing the runner to 2B.  PH then singled, advancing the runner to 2B.  A walk then loaded the bases.  PH then delivered a two RBI single to CF, scoring two runs.  What looked promising for PH, ended the opporunity when the Bruin defense pulled off a nice double play (Hughes and Shimozono).

Blacksburg would respond yet again, scoring two runs to re-take the lead 7-5.  Alex Pickrell led off with a single, and then Tyler Davis doubled to CF, advancing Pickrell to 3B. Jake Schirmer drew a walk to load the bases.  Alex Shimozono singled, scoring Pickrell.  Ethan Goforth reached 1B on an error, scoring Tyler Davis, while Schirmer advanced to 3rd and Shimozono to 2B.  Linkous was inserted as a courtsey runner for Goforth.  After a fly out, a Bruin runner was tagged out stealing home, and then the next batter struck out to end the inning.

PH did not quit, however, and pushed Blacksburg to the brink.  The lead off batter was HBP, and then PH doubled, advancing the runner on 1B to 3B.  A RBI ground ball, scored a run to make the score 7-6, and advancing the PH runner to 3B.  Tyler Davis then secured the win by getting the next two batters to fly out to end the game.

Blacksburg did not bat in the bottom of the 7th.

Offensively, PH had 8 hits, and was led by T. Stockstill, who went 2/3, and scored 2 runs.  Blacksburg had 12 hits and was led by Thomas Hughes who was 2/3 and scored 1 run.  Ethan Goforth was 2/4 with 2 RBI, and Morgan McCoy was 2/5 and scored a run.

Alex Shimozono got the win for the Bruins, pitching 4 innings.  He struck out four, scattered four hits, but walked six batters.  Tyler Davis scattered 4 hits and only walked one batter.

Head Coach Danny Shouse said after the game that "our bats are getting warm.  Not hot, but warm.  Good bunch on this team....We are never out of a ball game."

With the win, Blacksburg improves to 3-1 on the season and travels to Lord Botetourt on Friday for a non district game @ 5pm.
