Thomas Hughes goes the distance on mound, beating Radford 1-0

The Blacksburg Bruins got their second win in as many days with 1-0 dogfight win over the Radford Bobcats.  Pitcher Thomas Hughes led the Bruins on the mound, pitching 7 strong innings, striking out three, walking one batter, and surrending just two hits.

Offensively, Blacksburg had 5 hits, and was led by Alex Pickrell, who had an RBI double in the 2nd inning.  Tyler Barry, Tyler Davis, Ethan Goforth, and Alex Shimozono each had singles to round out the Bruin offense.

In the first inning, each team sent four batters to the plate, with Tyler Barry reaching on a walk in the top half of the first. Radford had a two out double, but stranded the runner after P Thomas Hughes got the next hitter to pop up to 3B, Tyler Davis.

Blacksburg would score it's only run of the game in the top of the 2nd inning. Ethan Goforth led off by drawing a walk, and then Alex Pickrell doubled to score the courtsey runner, Dylan Turman.  Alex Shimozono then singled, advancing Pickrell to 3B. With a 1st and 3rd scenario, Shimozono stole 2B, putting runners on 2B and 3B with no outs. But Radford got out of the jam by striking out the next two batters, and forcing a ground out to end the inning.

Radford went three up and three down in the bottom half of the inning, with two ground outs to SS and a ground out to 3B.

Blacksburg would also go three up and three down in the top of the 3rd.

In the bottom of the 3rd, two Radford runners reached base on fielding errors, but were stranded when Hughes struck out a batter and then got the 3rd out by forcing a fly ball to left field.

In the top of the 4th, Ethan Goforth led off with a single.  Then, courtsey runner, Dylan Turman, advanced to 2B on a error pickoff throw by the pitcher.  Turman advanced to 3B on a FC, and then Shimozono drew a walk to set up runners at 1st and 3rd.  However, both were stranded when a Bruin hitter grounded out.

In the bottom of the 4th, Hughes got Radford to once again go three up and three down, striking out one.

In the top of the 5th, Hughes drew a walk after two consecutive outs but was stranded.  In the bottom of the 5th, Radford went three up and three down for the third time in the game, with Hughes striking out one.

In the top of the 6th, after two consecutive outs, Alex Pickrell drew a walk.  Alex Shimozono and Zack Craven also drew walks to load the bases.  However, a FC ended the scoring threat and the inning.

In the bottom of the 6th, Radford's lead off batter reached 1B after getting HBP.  Blacksburg then displayed some great defense when Ethan Goforth caught a pop up in foul territory for the 1st out of the inning, and then the Bruins pulled off a heads up double play when Thomas Hughes flipped a ball to 2B Tyler Davis, who then threw to 1B Alex Shimozono.

In the top of the 7th, Tyler Barry hit a two out single, and Tyler Davis followed with a single, advancing Barry to 2B.  With runners on 1B and 2B, the Blacksburg scoring threat ended when the next batter was retired on a ground out to the pitcher.

In the bottom of the 7th, Radford led off with double to immediately put themselves in scoring position and tie the game. Hughes got the next batter to ground out, while the runner on 2B advanced to 3B.  With one out and the infield pullled in, Radford make a crucial baserunning mistake, trying to score on a ball hit to SS.  The combo of Morgan McCoy and Ethan Goforth made a heads up play getting the runner out at home.  With a runner on 1B from the previous play at home, the next Radford batter reached 1B on a Bruin throwing error.  The runner on 1B advanced to 2B.  With Radford runners on 1B & 2B and two outs, Hughes got the third out by forcing a fly ball to center field and end the game in stunning fashion.

After the game, Head Coach Danny Shouse said  "What a great job by Thomas Hughes today!  Ethan Goforth also had a great day.  These kids are awesome as a team."

With the win, Blacksburg moves to 2-0 on the season, and travels to Northside on Monday.
