Christiansburg Beats Blacksburg 9-8 in Back & Forth Battle To Win District Championship

Errors Costly for Blacksburg


On a night perfect for the game of baseball, Christiansburg rallied to beat Blacksburg in a hard fought game by both opponents.  In the end, Christiansburg edged Blacksburg 9-8 to win the Dixie Youth District 3 Championship and Advance to the State Tournament in South Hill, Va. 

By virtue of a coin toss the night before following the Christiansburg / Patrick County game, Blacksburg was the "visitor" and batted first.  In the top of the first, Blacksburg's Cordell Cory led off by drawing a walk, but was forced out at second on a fielder's choice.  Luke Goforth hit a single to put Blacksburg runners at 1B and 2B, but they were stranded when Christiansburg retired the next two Blacksburg batters.

In the bottom of the 1st, Christiansburg would send four batters to the plate, with MJ Hunter hitting a single, but was stranded.

In the top of the 2nd, Blacksburg drew first blood and scored a run to take the lead 1-0.  After an out, Tyler Vande Vord reached 1B via an error.  Bennett Shealor then hit a single, and he and Vande Vord advanced on a passed ball.  A second passed ball, allowed Vande Vord to score and Shealor moved to 3B.  Shealor was stranded at 3B after Christiansburg retired the next two Blacksburg batter.

In the bottom of the 2nd, Blacksburg's starting pitcher Colin Collver retired Christiansburg 3 up and 3 down.  

In the top of the 3rd, Blacksburg would score 4 more runs to extend their lead to 5-0.  After an out, Blaise Buttler hit a single and then Cordell Croy followed with a single of his own.  Sam Helton hit a single, and then Luke Goforth hit a triple to clear off the bases.  Colin Collver drew a walk, and the then stole 2B.  Goforth scored by stealing home.  Christiansburg retired the next two Blacksburg hitters to end the threat, but not before Blacksburg would add 4 earned runs to their total, and lead 5-0. 

In the bottom of the 3rd, Collver faced just four Christiansburg batters, giving up one hit to Evan Robbins, but he was stranded.

In the top of the 4th, Christiansburg recorded two consectutive outs and then Blaise Butler drew a walk.  Lead off batter Cordell Croy singled to put runner at 1B and 2B.  An out ended the threat, stranding both Butler and Croy.

In the bottom of the 4th, Christiansburg would rally and capitalize on Blacksburg errors to score 6 unearned runs.  After a strike out by Collin Collver, Christiansburg's Jason Duffie hit a single, but advanced to 3B on an outfield error.  MJ Hunter then reached on an error, scoring Duffie.  Dakota Sisson and Zalen Akers both reached on infield errors, with Hunter scoring. Reagan Harris hit a single for Christiansburg, scoring Sisson, and then Colin Collver struck out the next batter for the second out of the inning.  Brady Kirtner hit a single and he and Harris advanced on Blacksburg throwing errors.  Garrett Kuchan hit a single and Harris scored on more throwing errors by Blacksburg.  At the end of four complete innings, Christiansburg led 6-5.

In the top of the 5th, Blacksburg battled back to tie the game at 6-6.  Luke Goforth led off with single and advanced to 2B on a passed ball.  After an out, Stephen Case hit a single, scoring Goforth.  Parker Epperley reached on a fielder's choice and advanced on a passed ball and then Tyler Vande Vord reach on an error.  Vande Vord stole 2B to put runners at 3B & 2B, but both were stranded after Christiansburg retired the next two batters.

In the bottom of the 5th, Christiansburg would add three more unearned runs to push the score to 9-6.  Lead off batter Jason Duffie reached on an error and advanced to 2B on a passed ball.  MJ Hunter then reached first base on an error and he moved to 2B while Duffie advanced to 3B on a Blacksburg throwing error.  With runners on 3B and 2B, Dakota Sisson hit a sacrifice fly to score Duffie and record the first out.  Hunter moved to 3B on the play.  Zalen Akers then walked and stole 2B on a first and third situation.  MJ Hunter scored on a passed ball and Akers moved to 3B.  Reagan Harris hit a sacrifice fly to score Akers and record the 2nd out.  Seth Walker then drew a walk, and Blacksburg retired the next batter to end the threat.

In the top of the 6th, Blacksburg would rally, but come up just short.  Blaise Butler led off the inning with a single.  After an out, Sam Helton hit a single.  Luke Goforth was then hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Collin Collver then hit a 2 RBI single to score Butler and Helton, but a Blacksburg runner was thrown out at 3B for the 2nd out.  Stephen Case and Parker Epperley both drew walks to load the bases, but a strike out by Christiansburg ended the threat and the game with the score 9-8.  All of Christiansburg's runs were unearned.

The winning pitcher was Christiansburg's Brady Kirtner, who pitched 3 innings.  

Blacksburg's starting pitcher Collin Collver pitched 4 innings, scattering 6 hits and striking out 3, and allowed no earned runs.

With the win, Christiansburg will represent District 3 in the Dixie Youth State Tournament in South Hill, Va on July 20th. 

Blacksburg is the tournament runner up and with only six 10 year olds, will return six veterans to next year's team.  Three starters have 2 years left in the Minors division as they are only 8 years old.

Congratulations to both teams for a hard fought game, and both teams cheering for each other at the end of the game and during the awards presentation.
