Christiansburg Beats Patrick County 15-7

Demons Erupt for 8 Runs With 2 Outs In The 5th Inning


In the nightcap of the District 3 Dixie Youth Tournament, Christiansburg beat Patrick County 15-7 and is now the only undefeated team left in the tournament.  With the loss, Patrick Co. drops down to the loser's bracket to play Pulaski West @ 5pm on Tuesday.  Christiansburg has a rematch with Blacksburg @ 7pm on Tuesday in the District Semi-Finals.

Christiansburg's Jason Duffie would lead off the game with a single, but was stranded when Patrick Co. was able to retire the next three Demon batters.

in the bottom of the first, Patrick's McCray Sawyers drew a lead off walk, and after an out, Josh Cochran also drew a walk. Bryson Fulcher hit an RBI single, scoring Sawyers.  After a strike out, Garrett Worley reached on an error, that allowed Cochran to score.  Worley would steal 2B, but was stranded.  After one inning of play, Patrick led Christiansburg 2-0.

In the top of the 2nd, Christiansburg flew out and struck out to record two consecutive outs.  Reagan Harris and Brady Kirtner singled, but were stranded after an out.

In the bottom of the 2nd, Taylor Swails drew a walk, but was forced out on a fielder's choice and Christiansburg retired 3 of the 4 Patrick County batters they faced.  

After two innings, the score remained 2-0.

In the top of the 3rd, Ryan Shultz reached on cather's interference, but then Patrick retired 3 of the next 4 Christiansburg batters they faced.  Jason Duffie drew a walk, but was stranded.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Patrick was 3 up and 3 down and the score remained 2-0.

In the top of the 4th, Christiansburg would get their offense going and score 5 runs to pull ahead 5-2.  Dekota Sisson led off with a single, followed by a Zalen Akers single.  Both would advance one base on a passed ball to 3B and 2B respectively.  MJ Hunter drew a walk, and then after a strike out for the first out, Reagan Harris hit a single, scoring Sisson and Akers.  A Christiansburg runner was thrown out at 3B for the 2nd out.  Brady Kirtner then hit an RBI double, scoring Harris, who stole both 2B and 3B.  Garrett Kuchan bunted for a single, advancing Kirtner to 3B.  Kuchan then stole 2B. Kirtner scored on a passed ball, and Kuchan moved to 3B.  Jason Duffie then drew a walk and stole 2B.  Evan Robbins hit an RBI single and a Christiansburg player was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.  

In the bottom of the 4th, Patrick's Josh Cochram led off by drawing a walk.  Bryson Fulcher reached on an error.  Nick Duncan drew a walk, and then Garrett Worley reached on a fielder's choice, resulting in a runner to be out at home for the ist out of the inning.   Kelon Penn hit into a fielder's choice out, but recorded an RBI for scoring Fulcher.  Kase Leftwich was hit by a pitch, and then a strike out ended the inning.  After 4 complete innings of play, Christiansburg led Patrick County 5-3.

In the top of the 5th, Christiansburg would erupt for 10 runs by sending 14 players to the plate as Patrick struggled defensively in the field.  Christiansburg led off the inning with a hit by Dekota Sisson and then Zalen Akers reached on an error.  After two strike outs and what seemed to be minimal damage for Patrick County, Christiansburg would go on to score 8 more runs while Patrick struggled to make the 3rd out.  

Regan Harris started the rally with a 2 RBI single, scoring Sisson and Akers, and then Brady Kirtner hit an RBI double, scoring Harris.  Garrett Kuchan was hit by a pitch and then Jason Duffie had an RBI single, scoring Kirtner.  Evan Robbins reached base on a routine ground ball that was booted and then Dekota Sisson reach on an error via another routine ground ball that appeared to be the 3rd out, but was misplayed.  Zalen Akers then reached by the third straight Patrick error.  MJ Hunter capitalized on the Patrick miscues with a 2 RBI double.  Seth Walker then reached via an error and in conjuction with a throwing error, 2 more runs scored.  Finally, Patrick recorded the 3rd out to escape the inning with the score 15-3.   

In the bottom of the 5th and on the brink of the 10 run rule elimination, Patrick battled back with 3 runs to make the score 15-6.  McCray Sawyers led off the inning getting hit by a pitch, and then Landon Augustine hit a single. Josh Cochran hit an RBI single, scoring Sawyers.  After a strike out, Nick Duncan hit a RBI double, scoring Augustine and Cochran.  The inning ended with two straight infield outs.  After 5 complete innings of play, Christiansburg led 15-6.

In the top of the 6th, Christiansburg sent 4 batters to plate, but could not score.  Garrett Kuchan hit a single, but was stranded.  

In the bottom of the 6th, Patrick still had some fight left as Kase Leftwich started off the inning with a single and Taylor Swails drew a walk.  After an infield out and a strike out, Josh Cochran hit an RBI single to score Leftwich.  The game ended on a ground ball hit to the first baseman for the last out of the game, with Christiansburg winning 15-7.

Jason Duffie was the winning pitcher for Christiansburg, giving up just one hit, striking out five, and walking 3 Patrick batters.  

With the win, Christiansburg advances to play Blacksburg in a rematch @ 7PM on Tuesday @ the Jaycee Field in Blacksburg VA.  Christiansburg will be the "visitor" while Blacksburg will be the "home" team.

With the loss, Patrick drops down to the losers bracket finals and plays Pulaksi East @ 5pm on Tuesday @ the Jaycee Field in Blacksburg, Va.  Pulaski East will be the "home" team, while Patrick will be the "visiting" team.
