Blacksburg Eliminates Montgomery County 16-6

Bruin Offense Stays Hot, Pounding Out 11 Hits.


In the 2nd game of day 3 of the District 3 Dixie Youth Tournament, Blacksburg came from behind to beat Montgomery County 16-6 in 4 innings.  

Matt Lawerence led off for Montgomery Co. in the top of the 1st with a single then Parker Hale reached on an error.  Alfread Shean hit a single followed by a Rusty Marshall RBI single, scoring Hale.  Landon Shaver reached on an error, and then a throwing error alowed Marshall to score.  The inning ended with a fielder's choice.  Blacksburg also had nice defensive throw to the get a Montgomery Co. player out at 3B.

Blacksburg would respond in the bottom of the 1st with 3 runs of their own.  Cordell Croy was hit by a pitch.  After an out caught stealing,  Sam Helton drew a walk.  Helton would advance to 2B on a wild pitch and then Luke Goforth also drew a walk.  Helton would steal 3B and then Goforth stole 2B.  After a second out, Steven Case had single, scoring Helton.  Parker Epperley then had a 2 RBI single up the middle, scoring Goforth and Case.  Tyler Vande Vord had a single, but was stranded after a Blackburg runner was caught stealing.  At the end on one inning of play, Blacksburg woud lead 3-2.

Montgomery County quickly responded by scoring three runs to pull ahead 5-3.  Kaden Poff reached on an error, and after a strike out, Preston Harris reached on an error.  Eddie Tickle hit a single.  Reed Underwood reached on a fielder's choice and then Josh Monday reached on a single scoring Harris.  Back at the top of the line up, Matt Lawerence had a single.  An out ended the inning.  Tickle and Underwood would both score in the inning.   

In the bottom of the 2nd, Blacksburg would score 8 runs to take control of the game 11-5.  Bennett Shealor drew a walk to start the inning and advanced to second on a WP.  After a strike out,  Eric Heinze reached on an error, and Logan Vance hit a fielder's choice, forcing Bennett out at 3B for the 2nd out.  Blaise Butler drew a walk, and then Cordell Croy hit a 2 RBI double, scoring Heinze and Vance.  Sam Helton then drew a walk, Luke Goforth reached on an error, using his speed to beat out a bobbled ball.  Colin Colver would reach on an error, and then Stephen Case hit a 3 RBI single to score Croy, Helton, and Goforth.  Parker Epperley reached on an error and Tyler Vande Vord hit a single to score Collver and Case.  An out ended the Blacksburg threat.  

In the top of the 3rd, Blacksburg woud retire the first batter and then walked two straight in Rusty Marshall and Landon Shaver.  Blacksburg picked off a Montgomery County runner at 3B for the 2nd out. Trevor Miles then drew a walk and Kaden Poff hit an RBI single, scoring Marshall.  The next hitter flew out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Blacksburg would go 3 up and 3 down.  After 3 complete innings of play, Blacksburg woud lead 11-6.

In the top of the 4th, Blacksburg would record two consecutive outs, a strike out and an infield put out.  Parker Hale then doubled, but was stranded as the next batter struck out.

In the bottom of the 4th, Blacksburg would end the game, by scoring 5 runs to make the score 16-6.  Luke Goforth led off the inning with a triple, and then Colin Colver and Stephen Case both had singles.  Parker Epperely followed with a single and Tyler Vande Vord reached on a fielder's choice.  Bennett Shealor then hit a single to end the game.  

Offensively, Blacsburg would pound out 11 hits, and draw 5 walks.  The Bruins would send 28 batters to the plate in just 4 innings.  

The winning pitcher was Cordell Croy, who pitched three innings, giving up 6 hits, striking out  1, and walking 3 batters.

Luke Goforth pitched one inning in relief, giving up one hit and striking out 2 batters.

With the win, Blacksburg advances to play Christiansburg in the night cap on Tuesday @ 7pm in the District 3 Semi-Finals.

With the loss, Montgomery County was eliminated from the tournament.
