Blacksburg Eliminates Radford 15-0

Bruins Pound out 11 hits in just three innings


In the second game of round two of the District 3 Dixie Youth Tournament, Blacksburg exploded for 15 runs to beat Radford in an elimination game in the losers bracket.

Radford would only send 10 runners to the plate in the three inning game, which ended early due to the 15 run rule.  

Eli Woods led off the game with a single, which would be Radford's only hit of the game. Caleb Sparks drew a walk in the 2nd inning and Austin Shepherd drew a walk in the top of the 3rd

Two of the three Radford runners who reached base were caught stealing.

Blacksburg scored 7 runs in the bottom of the first, sending all twelve Bruin players to the plate.  Cordell Croy led off by drawing a walk, and then Sam Helton hit a single.  Luke Goforth hit a 2 RBI triple, scoring both Croy and Helton to put Blacksburg on the board 2-0.  Colin Colver was hit by a ptich and then stole 2B.  Stephen Case hit a single to score Colver. After an out, Tyler Vande Vord hit a single and advanced to second on a passed ball.  After a 2nd out, Aiden Seeley drew a walk, and then Blaise Butler hit a RBI single.  Eric Heinze reached on an error and then the inning ended on a pop up to the catcher.  

In the bottom of the second, Blacksburg added four runs to push their lead to 11-0.  After a lead off out, Sam Helton hit a single and scored on a RBI double by Luke Goforth.  Colin Colver followed with his own double, scoring Goforth, and Steven Case hit a single, scoring Colver.  Parker Epperley followed with a single and then Tyler Vande Vord hit an RBI single, scoring Colver.  The inning ended with two straight line drive outs.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Blacksburg scored four more runs to end the game @ 15-0.  After a lead off out, Sam Helton was hit by a pitch, and then Luke Goforth drew a walk to put runners at frst and second base.  After an out, Stephen Case walked to load the bases, and Parker Epperley reached on an error to score Helton.  Tyler Vande Vord then hit a hard shot down the first base line to score Goforth, and Epperely scored all the way from first on a throwing error from the outfield. With Epperely scoring, the game ended early after just three innings of play.

Offfensively, Blackburg sent 27 players to the plate, pounded out 11 hits, and drew 5 walks in just three innings.  Twenty one Bruins reached base safely, including two hit by a pitch, and just two by error.  

The Bruins were led by Luke Goforth who was 2/2 with a triple and a double.  Sam Helton and Stephen Case, also went 2/2, as both had two singles.  Goforth, Helton, and Case all reached base three times with Goforth and Case drawing walks and Helton getting HBP.  Colin Colver had a double, while Tyler Vande Vord, Blaise Butler, and Parker Epperley each hit a single.

Luke Goforth was the winning pitcher for Blacksburg, pitching two innings, giving up one hit, striking out four, and walking one.

Sam Helton pitched one inning in relief, facing four batters, striking out one, walking one and did not surrender a hit.

With the win, Blacksburg advances in the losers bracket and plays Montgomery County on Monday @ 6 PM.  

With the loss, Radford was eliminated from the tournament.
