Christiansburg Edges Blacksburg 4-3 in Hard Fought Battle

The Demons win in the bottom of the 6th

 

In the nightcap of the first round of the Dixie Youth District 3 Tournament, Christiansburg beat Blacksburg 4-3 in a game that will be remembered for a very long time.  Base running errors were costly for Blacksburg, losing 4 runners between 2nd and 3rd late in the game, while Christiansburg capitalized late to win.

In the top of the 1st, Luke Goforth and Stephen Case both had singles, but were stranded.

In the bottom of the 1st, Christiansburg went 3 up and 3 down.

In the top of the 2nd, Blacksburg would strike first, scoring three runs to pull ahead 3-0.  Tyler Vande Vord led off with a triple, and then Aiden Seely was HBP.  Bennett Shealor then hit an RBI single to score Vande Vord.  Blaise Butler then hit an RBI single.  After an out, Eric Henize had an RBI single to score Seely and Shealor.  The lead off hitter, Cordell Croy drew a lead off walk to load the bases and then a infield hit resulted in a double play to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 1st, Christiansburg would respond with a run of their own.  Zalen Akers led off with a single and then MJ Hunter followed with another single.  After an out, Reagan Harris reached on an error, resulting in Akers scoring.   Blacksburg would retire the next two batters.  At the end of two innings, the score was 3-1, Blacksburg.

Neither team would score in the 3rd as good pitching and defense dominated the inning.  

Blacksburg did not score again in the top of the 4th, however Bennett Shealor did reach on a single but was stranded.

In the bottom of the 4th, Chrstiansburg scored a run to make the score 3-2.  After an out, Zalen Akers walked, advanced on two throwing errors by Blacksburg and scored on a single by MJ Hunter.  The Bruins would retire the next two batters.

Neither team would score in the 5th, although there was plenty of action.  Blacksburg would get a lead off walk and then a hard hit single.  The runner advancing to 3rd (from first) was thrown out by a great throw by the Christiansburg right fielder, and then the other Blacksburg runner was later caught stealing 3B for two quick outs. A fly out would end the inning for Blacksburg.  Evan Roberts had a bunt single for Christiansburg, but was stranded.

In the top of the 6th, after an out, Blacksburg would have a hitter reach on a single, then advance to 2B on a passed ball, but was caught stealing third for the 2nd out.  Tyler Vande Vord and Benett Shealor both drew walks to threaten again, but were stranded after a fielder's choice for the 3rd out.  

In the bottom of the 6th, Christiansburg would take the lead for the first time in the game to pull out the come from behind win.  Zalen Akers led off with a single, MJ Hunter followed with an RBI double to tie the game.  Then, Seth Walker hit a RBI single to socre Hunter for the win.

Zalen Akers got the win for Christiansburg, pitching 5 innings in relief.

With the win, Christiansburg advances to play Patrick County at 6 Pm on Sunday while Blacksburg drops down to the losers bracket and plays Radford @ 4pm.
