Patrick County Beats Montgomery County 15-6

Patrick Co. Pounds out 13 hits in the Win

 

In the second game of the Dixie Youth Minors District 3 Tournament, Patrick County beat Montgomery County 15-6 with an offensive showing, knocking out 13 hits.  

Patrick got on the scoreboard in the top of the 1st by scoring 4 runs; scoring the first four players it sent to the plate. McCray Saunders led off the inning with a single and scored on Landon Augustine's RBI double.  Josh Cochran followed with a double of his own, and after a Bryson Fulcher walk, scored on a RBI single by Nick Duncan.  Garrett Worley singled to score Fulcher.

Montgomery County did not score in the first three innings of play while Patrick did not score in the 2nd inning.  After two complete innings, Patrick led 4-0.

In the top of the 3rd, Patrick picked up four more runs to make the score 8-0.  Jacob Mullis led off the inning and reached on an error.  After an out, McCray Saunders hit a single and Landon Augustine reached via an error.  Josh Cochran reached base on a fielder's choice.  With two outs, Bryson Fulcher reached on a error, and then Nick Duncan hit an RBI single. Mullis, Saunders, Cochran, and Fulcher all scored in the inning.

Patrick County did not score in the top of the 4th as Montgomery County's defense held Patrick in check.

In the bottom of the 4th, Montgomery County scored their first run of the game.  Lead off batter Matt Lawerence hit a single and then Parker Hale drew a walk.  Lawerence stole second, but was caught stealing 3B.  Alfread Shean drew a walk, and then Rusty Marshall had an RBI fielder's choice, scoring Hale.  After 4 innings, Patrick Co. led 8-1.

In the top of the 5th, Patrick County picked up two more runs.  Bryson Fulcher led off the innign with a single, and then Nick Duncan hit an RBI triple, scoring Fulcher.  Garrett Worley drew a walk, and Duncan scored on a passed ball.

In the bottom of the 5th, Montgomery County made things interesting by scoring five runs to pull within four at 10-6. Patrick County would walk five batters Montgomery County sent to the plate as Trevor Miles, Kaden Poff, Issac Richardson all walked to load the bases.   After an out, Matt Lawerence drew an RBI walk as did Parker Hale.  With bases loaded, Alfred Shean hit a RBI double, scoring Lawerence and Hale.  With runners on 2B and 3B and just one out, Patrick County was able to retire two straight Montgomery County batters to battle out of the jam.  At the end of 5 innings of play, Patrick Co. led 10-6.

In the top of the 6th, Patrick added five insurance runs.  Taylor Swails led off the inning by drawing a walk, and then McCray Saunders reach via an error.  Landon Augustine hit an RBI single followed by another RBI single by Josh Cochran.   Bryson Fulcher drew a walk, and Nick Duncan hit another RBI single. Garrett Worley hit an RBI single, and then with no outs, Montgomery County retired three straight Patrick batters.  Swails, Sawyers, Augustine, Cochran, and Fulcher would all score for Patrick County. 

Montgomery County did not score in the bottom of the 6th, sending just three batters to the plate.

Starting pitcher Nick Duncan was the winning pitcher for Patrick County, pitching three innings and giving up just one hit.  

With the win, Patrick advances to play Pulaski East , who drew the bye in the first round of the tournament, @ 2pm on Sunday.  

Montgomery County drops to the loser's bracket, receives a bye on Sunday, and plays the winner of Blacksburg and Radford on Monday @ 6pm.
