Ben Fraley pitches 2 hitter and goes the distance for the win

The Blacksburg Varsity won it's first district game by beating visiting Salem 2-1 in what was the ultimate pitchers duel.  Ben Fraley led the Bruins over the Spartans with a complete game 9 inning 2 hitter to get the win.  Fraley allowed one unearned run (in the 2nd) in the effort and struck out 8.

Salem socred first via an unearned run to jump out to a 1-0 lead.  However, the Bruins tied the score in the bottom of the third at 1-1.  John Hinson had a one out single and stole second.  Ben Fraley's infield single moved Hinson to 3rd.  Hinson scored on Tyler Barry's sacrifice fly.

The teams battled for the next five scoreless innings, making one solid defensive play after another.

In the bottom of the 9th Jake Schirmer led off with a single.  After an out,  John Hamborsky singled, moving Schirmer to second.  John Hinson hit a grounder to short and Hamborsky was forced at second.  Hinson beat out the throw to 1st as Salem tried to complete the double play and as the throw went wide (to the first baseman), Schrimer scored the winning run (from third).

Heach Coach Jim Shockley said "Fraley was magnificent on the mound today and we played solid defense behind him.  Runs were really hard to come by today but we finally made it happen in the 9th.  I am very proud of our guys today."

The young Bruins improved their record to 6-7 on the season, and 1-2 in District play.
