The Bruins started of the game Friday night looking for a little redemption from the 13-5 loss the previous Friday night in Botetourt. The first 2 innings for both teams were highlighted by good pitching and excellent defense.
The third inning was productive for Blacksburg. Dylan Turman led the inning off by drawing a walk. Ethan Goforth then successfully sacrificed him to 2nd base. Three consecutive hits by Montgomery, McCoy and Davis would push 2 runs across the plate. At the end of the 3rd Blacksburg led 2-0.
Morgan McCoy retired the first three batters in the 4th but Blacksburg failed to generate any offense in the bottom half of the 4th.
In the 5th, the Cavaliers got on the board, scoring a run. However, in the bottom of the inning, the Bruins would tack on two more runs. Goforth and Montgomery would reach base on two errors by the Cavaliers. Tyler Davis made them pay for their mistakes with a single to the right center field gap, which would score both Bruin runners. At the end of the 5th inning the Bruins would lead 4-1.
A couple errors in the 6th would allow the Cavaliers to put two runs on the board. The Bruins failed to add any cushion to the lead in the bottom of the 6th. At the end of 6 innings the Bruins still led 4-3. In the 7th, Coach Weller allowed McCoy to retire the 9th batter, and then brought in his closer, Adam Linkous to face the top of the line up. Linkous pitched to two batters before getting the number three hitter to fly out to the Short Stop.
Morgan McCoy pitched 6 and 1/3 strong innings for the win. He ended the day allowing 6 hits, no walks, 3 strikeouts and only 1 earned run. Adam Linkous recorded the save. The Bruins finished the day with 4 hits. Offensively, Blacksburg was led by Tyler Davis with 2 singles and 3 RBIs. Morgan McCoy and Sam Montgomery each added a single.
