Jefferson Forest Rallies in Bottom on 7th to Beat Blacksburg 4-3
Tuesday, May 27, 2007, Jefferson Forest --- Jefferson Forest and
Blacksburg battled back and forth in Region III play Tuesday under a
full moon. George Perkovich took the mound for Blacksburg and kept the
Cavaliers in check most of the night. Jefferson Forest jumped out to a
2-0 lead early in the game with multiple hit combinations. Much like the
night before, Blacksburg battled back playing "small ball." In the top
of the 4th, Blacksburg responded with three runs to go ahead 3-2. Doug
Fylpa started the inning by drawing a walk. Then, Andrew Smith
successfully bunted him to second and beat out the throw to first. Trey
Gresh then moved both runners with a bunt and reached first. After an
out, and with bases still loaded, Jake Badinelli drew a walk, scoring
the first run. Joey Phillips then recorded a two RBI single scoring
Smith and Gresh. The game proceeded through the next couple innings via
a defensive battle, with multiple ground balls and several running
catches in the outfield.
With Blacksburg leading 3-2 in the bottom of
the seventh, the full moon levied very interesting play. A Jefferson
Forest batter reached first base by drawing a lead off walk. After
stealing second, the runner tagged up and advanced to third on a long
fly to right. A sacrifice fly resulted in a score, tying the game. With
two outs, Jefferson Forest reached first on a sharp grounder to third.
The runner stole second and then scored on a hard hit ball up the middle.
Two back-to-back late night games in Lynchburg seemed to take it's toll
on the young Bruins. Jefferson Forest demonstrated why they were the
number one seed, regular season Seminole, and tournament champion.
