Bruins Beat Brookville 5-4 in First Round of Region Play
Monday, May 28, 2007, Brookville --- Both Blacksburg and Brookville sent
their aces to the mound for complete games in a single elimination first
round region game. Both aces pitched well, demonstrating why they are
their team's leading pitcher. Senior Jake Badinelli scattered seven hits
and struck out 4 over the course of the game to keep Brookville in
check. Brookville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first,
but the Bruins bounced back with four runs in the top of the third.
Senior Doug Flypa stood his ground on an inside pitch and was hit by the pitch, gaining
first base. Then Sophomore Trey Gresh successfully bunted him to
second while beating out the play at first. With runners on first and
second, Badinelli stroked a double, scoring both runners. The next
batter, Sophomore Joey Phillips, belted a two run homer to right center
to put the Bruins up 4-1.
Brookville rallied by picking up two runs in the fourth, cutting the
lead to 4-3. In the sixth, Badinelli reached on a hit. Adam Siegel, in
as a courtsey runner for the Badinelli, distracted the Brookville
pitcher who balked, sending Siegel to second. The Bruins immediately
capitalized when Greg Juanarena doubled, sending Siegel home to increase
the lead to 5-3. Brookville responded with a run of their own to cut the
lead to 5-4. Junior catcher Greg Juanarena and Jake Badinelli led
Blacksburg with two hits each. Blacksburg's defense was solid,
committing just one error.
Blacksburg advances to the quarterfinals at number one ranked Jefferson
Forest on Tuesday.
